You cannot change the past, but you can alter its consequence!

"The Presentation", revolves around five law students who are preparing a report on an age old open and shut murder which they have to present in their class. Ravi casually suggests that the offender, Richard Bagwell, might have been framed. Each of them looks into the case with their own perspective and soon discover that there is more to the case than meets the eye. They look deeper into the case and their suspicion grows with it. The five friends come up with various interesting theories and make some mysterious discoveries.
What started as a boring case report becomes a challenge to them, who imagine themselves fighting for the offender who was sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit.
The story involves a combination of seriousness and humour, guile and honesty. The five of them lose themselves in a century old turn of events in search of a hidden mystery.

Excerpt-
Ravi heard his door opening slowly from the outside. He heard the key being removed from the knob. He hesitantly said “Who…Who is that?” His heart suddenly started beating faster as he saw him, he tried to run but his legs held him back and he started to sweat at the sight of the pistol pointing at him. He stammered some words but he knew it wouldn’t matter. The clock showed 7:20.
Kishore was walking up and down the hallway. The decision was not made and the time was running out. He was tired and wanted to sleep but it was still 7:20.
Neha dropped her knife when she heard a loud noise. She was scared to go out and find its source. She ran to her brother to see if he was safe. “10 more minutes” she said, “It’s 7:20”.

The Recognition of Sakuntala: A Play In Seven Acts (Oxford World's Classics), by Kalidasa

Kalidasa's play about the love of King Dusyanta for Sakuntala, a monastic girl, is the supreme work of Sanskrit drama by its greatest poet and playwright (c.4th century CE). Overwhelmingly erotic in tone and in performance, The Recognition of Sakuntala aimed to produce an experience of aesthetic rapture in the audience, comparable to certain types of mystical experience. The pioneering English translation of Sakuntala in 1789 caused a sensation among European composers and writers (including Goethe), and it continues to be performed around the world. This vibrant new verse translation includes the famous version of the story from the Mahabharata, a poetic and dramatic text in its own right and a likely source for Kalidasa. The introduction discusses the play in the aesthetic and cultural context of ancient India.

About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, voluminous notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

A Most Beautiful Play
By Samesh Braroo
Kalidasa is India's greatest Sanskrit poet and playwright. Many centuries after his death, his commitment has not flinched to remain India's most respected bard. When you've read world's greatest plays, you must then read this play for the proverbial dessert. For most people, drama was invented in Greece, yet Kalidasa didn't know that, being apart by sea and time. So far as he is concerned, he was as much an inventor of this art, as were his more famous counterparts.
`Recognition of Sakuntala' is a beautiful love story of a married king with a country girl, his deserting her and eventually reclaiming back, with the aid of providence.
I've several translations of this play, but Johnson's version is probably the best - at least in English.
If Shakespeare or Tolstoy or Munshi Premchand gratify you, Kalidasa will as much.

A hit in Europe around 1789
By Neri
The original translation by Sir William Jones of this famous Indian play was popular accross Europe and read by prominant poets including Goethe and Schiller in the late 1700's. Sir William Jones was also a member of Samuel Johnson and Edmund Burke's politically influentual Literary Club and the translation by him, this is not it, was a small hit across Europe. It inspired some stylist influence upon Goethe and Goethe must have read this about the time of the end of his "Italian Journey" where he later gained some creative energy after a dry spell following the massive success of his "Sorrows of Young Werther". (Sir William Jones is most famous today for observing that the similarities in Latin, Sanskrit, Persian, English and other, now called, Indo-European languages could not be just an accident).

This modern translation by W.J. Johnson is a good effort; however, for a variety of reasons loses something in translation as it was written to be performed in at least two languages, Sanskrit and Prakrit, and also involved a lot of body language which at times was almost like a dance. Sir William Jones' translation is more vibrant and historically relevant, and other translations of his of Oriental translations as well as original poems, had an impact on 17th and 18th century European literature.

Jones was a romantic supporter of the American revolution, even meeting with Benjamin Franklin in Paris to attempt a resolution to the crisis and play Franklin a game of chess. Jones' most famous and widely popular poem, while he was alive, was "Caissa, or, The Game of Chess" which would have gotten Jones through many important doors and meetings.

The play "Sakuntala" was written in the 4th or 5th century CE in India and is considered one of India's great plays. It is interesting for the cultural attitudes of India at that time, especially the strong class system, and making comparisons with other cultures around the world. Never-the-less The play still holds its own in translation as something many readers might find poetically brilliant, entertaining, and also funny.

Byron was also a youthful reader of Jones and there are a lot of stylistic similarities between them. Byron even wrote a parady of some of Jones' poems in his youth.

Jones spent his later life, in India, assisting in setting up a legal system for India which Jones insisted should be based in large part on Indian culture and customs. Jones represents a more early liberal, respecting relationship with the colonies of India; not the heavy-handed British paternal one that was to dominate that relationship after Jones' death.

(When universities teach diversity they should also teach it from the perspective of history; my professors acted like the 60's generation discovered multiculturialism and cultural appreciation. Why wouldn't a society that appriciates other culturals know the name of Sir William Jones? To me it points at some decrepidy that we don't).

Youth pushes up through all her limbs
By HH
W. J. Johnson's introductory essay is thorough and informative, pitched at the general reader but never condescending. It begins with a brief outline of what is known of Kalidasa’s life and an assessment of the place of Sakuntala in the canon of world drama. A succinct and illuminating outline of the plot and structure of the play follows. The Recognition of Sakuntala tells the story of the love between King Dusyanta and the beautiful Sakuntala, who lives in the woodland hermitage of her foster father, a devout ascetic called Kanva. Sakuntala and Dusyanta contract a secret “love match” after which the King returns to his court leaving her his ring as a keepsake. Shortly afterward, distracted by thoughts of her lover, Sakuntala neglects her duties of hospitality and becomes the unknowing victim of a curse: her beloved will forget her until she produces some token of recognition. When she subsequently appears at Dusyanta’s court visibly pregnant, she is rejected unrecognised. Even worse, when she tries to produce the ring to prove her story, she discovers that it was lost in her journey. After her public humiliation, Sakuntala vanishes into a heavenly beam of light (provided by her mother, the nymph Menaka). When the missing ring is later found in the belly of a fish, Dusyanta remembers his lost love and is plunged into despair and remorse. He is eventually called into service by Indra, king of the gods, to battle a gang of troublesome demons. On his way home, Dusyanta visits a celestial hermitage where he is fortuitously reunited with Sakuntala and meets his young son—destined to be Bharata, a “world emperor.” Johnson’s summary provides a useful orientation to the world of the play and its style. In a further discussion of the play’s plot and structure, he demonstrates the ways in which six of the seven acts of the play mirror one another with the central fourth act serving as a transition.

Johnson's introduction continues with a discussion of the workings of Sanskrit aesthetic theory (as outlined in the Natyasastra) related to the play and the system of ethics that underpins its action. Here, Johnson addresses important issues of language giving an insightful overview of the cultural and political context reflected in the use of Sanskrit (the classical written language) and Prakrit (common spoken dialects) to delineate different characters and incidents in the play. He also alerts the reader to the gestural language of theatrical performance by means of which this ancient play is still comprehensible to modern audiences. Here he includes a helpful discussion of the levels of language employed in the text, explaining which characters speak what—verse, prose, Sanskrit, or Prakrit—and why. In the course of this he also illustrates how the works of Kalidasa came to be the preserve of Sanskrit scholars rather than remaining popular dramas. All of this serves to explain the reasons why an English translation, however skilled, is unable to effectively communicate the “verbal polyphony” of the original text. It is most useful to approach the play with this understanding. He goes on to provide detailed information on the verse and prose structures of the original and how the assignment of verse speaking reflects the aesthetic of the piece in terms of the rasas (aesthetic “flavors” or “sensations”) revealed and communicated by the play. Where the discussion threatens to become too complex for the non-specialist, the reader is helpfully directed to Johnson’s “Selected Bibliography” for sources of further study.

Again addressing the play as a piece of theater, a section on “Staging and Stage Conventions” explains the four types of representation in conventional Sanskrit drama: spoken word, gesture, costume, and emotion. These elements work together to create a uniquely performative dramatic language that transcends the written word. Johnson describes this as “’spectacle poetry’ as opposed to verbal poetry” (p. xxv). For those unfamiliar with the Indian Kuttiyattam theater tradition, this communicates some idea of the complex meta-text of performance that is a fundamental element of traditional Sanskrit theater.

Johnson intends this version of the play to be performable and says that he seeks to “liberate” the text through this translation. Does he succeed? On balance, I would say that he does. The text is accessible and is helped with excellent notes throughout. The obvious alternation between verse and prose gives some flavor of the complexity of the original without obscuring the drama. The action moves along at a brisk pace and the occasional textual notes are useful without being intrusive. It is a splendid story, beautifully told. The serious scholar might wish for more information -- e.g., to clarify certain elements of ritual -- but Johnson’s notes helpfully direct the reader to more specialist materials.

Following the play, Johnson includes the Sakuntala story from the Mahabharata in his own, lucid translation. It has been usefully condensed to provide only essential information, yet retains a sense of poetry and it is rendered, like the original, in un-rhymed verse. Shakuntala’s drama is just as compelling in the Mahabharata, but appears to be more focused on teaching ethical lessons than on exciting rasa. In this version Dusayanta does recognize Sakuntala when she appears at his court, but refuses to acknowledge her. This allows Sakuntala to offer some important lessons on the power of conscience, and the ritual, spiritual and daily necessity of wives and children (especially sons) for all men. One can see the source of much of the specific action in Kalidasa’s play in the Mahabharata, but Dusayanta’s abuse of Sakuntala seems brutal and unrelenting -- really quite shocking. When a “divine voice” demands Dusayanta’s recognition of his spurned wife, he as able to acknowledge her without engendering popular doubt and suspicion. It is clear that the epic addresses itself to moral lessons and political realities, most particularly the necessity for a king (and his successors) to be seen as legitimate. The play, on the other hand, is a great love story.

This handy and inexpensive edition will be a valuable text for students of Asian Studies, World Literature, or Drama.

Hard to Believe This was the Same Marine Sergeant Major I Knew
By Ronald Gravois
I was a lance corporal in the Marine reserve unit in New Orleans where Fagot was the batallion sergeant major and later promoted to warrant officer. He was so squared away that you would never believe that he was such a monster at home. He was admired by everyone from the Colonel on down. But the story shows that he did not treat his family with love. Control was more the word. His wife was weak and compliant and he sent his daughters to public schools where they received little morality training. I couldn't put the book down, because I knew some of the people in it and all of the places mentioned. I believe his daughter wrote the book partly to explain the situation to her father's family. Also probably to make some cash. While not a literary masterpiece, it is well written and not repetitive. Situations are adequately explained. I wish there had been some of Fagot's history in the Marine Corps, but perhpas Carol did not know that part of his life. I found it to be a sad but compelling true story. In my attempts to research the story, I learned that the author, Carol, died in 2005. I hope his surviving daughters and grandkids have a happy life. I would love to buy a DVD of the movie, but have been unable ot find it available. It plays on the Family Channel occasionally. I would very much like to see it.

Awesome book-author Carol Donahue passed away last week of cancer. She was wonderful friend of mine.
By Shannon Talkington Pierron
I met the author, Carol Donahue through a friend of mine. She and my friend eventually got married. Carol had told me about her childhood and her teenage years in great detail. I can remember her walking out with the book "Deadly Relations" and giving it to me. She gave me the book to read and I read it in two days. I couldn't put it down. I guess it hit me harder since I KNEW the person the book was about. It made me better understand why she was the way she was. Her father tortured his wife and children and their spouses. She then gave me a copy of the movie that was played on television. I have watched it over and over. Unfortunatley, I loaned my book to someone and never got it back. That book meant alot to me because Carol had written something very special to me in it and signed it for me. I will never see that book again. Carol passed away on January 3, 2009 of cancer. I was devastated to learn of her death. She was a great inspiration to me and a great friend. She finally married the love of her life and they had 15 good years together. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter and friend. R.I.P. Carol Donahue Theriot. You will be missed.

Great true crime
By Donna Delaune
Very interesting story that I don't remember hearing about when it happened. Very well written, by two non-professional writers. My heart went out to this family. It must be terrible to love someone and see his life unravel right before your eyes. Especially when the consequences of the unraveling are violent and deadly. This man tore his loving family apart. This was a story of drug addiction that lead to mental illness, or maybe the mental illness was fueled by his drug addiction. It was very sad.

Someone at a Distance (Persephone Classics), by Dorothy Whipple

'A very good novel indeed about the fragility and also the tenacity of love' commented the Spectator recently about this 1953 novel by Dorothy Whipple, which was ignored fifty years ago because 'editors are going mad for action and passion' (as she was told by her publisher). But this last novel by a writer whose books had previously been bestsellers is outstandingly good by any standards. Apparently 'a fairly ordinary tale about the destruction of a happy marriage' yet 'it makes compulsive reading' in its description of an ordinary family ('Ellen was that unfashionable creature, a happy housewife') struck by disaster when the husband, in a moment of weak, mid-life vanity, runs off with a French girl. Dorothy Whipple is a superb stylist, with a calm intelligence in the tradition of Mrs Gaskell (both wrote in the Midlands and had similar preoccupations). 'The prose is simple, the psychology spot on' said the Telegraph, and John Sandoe Books commented: 'We have all delighted in this unjustly forgotten novel; it is well written and compelling.'

Cliched and hoary divorce plot, but exquisitely written
By Jay Dickson
Dorothy Whipple has been one of the authors Persephone Books has been most proud to re-dsicover, and the beautifully sharp prose in this 1950s novel will alert you immediately why she's been a favorite. Yet for all that the novel is bit of a disappointment. The plot seems reminsicent of Clare Booth Luce's THE WOMEN: a noble-minded wealthy married woman loses her weak and contempible husband to the clutches of a stylish and spiteful vixen, while her daughter suffers tremendously and her friends cluck and sympathize. Some of the characters are also quite hard to take. Anne, the sickeningly adorable daughter, carries on so much when her father is caught with the French interloper, Louise, that you begin to develop a perverse delight in her unhappiness; and all the male characters are wholly two-dimensional weaklings. With the older women characters, however, Whipple seems right on the money. The heroine, Ellen, is perhaps a bit too noble but is also observed with sympathy and skill, and Louise, the clear villain, is surprisingly well-drawn too. Whipple's ability to turn a memorable phrase is also consistent throughout.

A must read story about the end of marital bliss.
By Midwest Book Review
A marriage of over two decades is in danger, and the culprit seems to be the groom's own mother. "Someone at a Distance" is the story of Ellen and Avery North, a happily married couple with two children; all seems well with their life. But when Avery's mother arranges for a French girl to become a companion for him, it incites a long and confusing turmoil for everyone involved. Composed in an enthralling and realistic manner, "Someone at a Distance" is a must read story about the end of marital bliss.

Amazing
By Ellis Bell
Dorothy Whipple's Someone at a Distance is a very complicated novel to write about. It's the story of the Norths, a suburban couple with two teenage children. Avery North's aging mother engages a young Frenchwoman as her companion, and he develops an attachment to her that develops into an affair and later leads to divorce from his wife Ellen. This novel is a stunning book about the wide-ranging effects an affair can have on several families.

Dorothy Whipple's language is very simple. Her prose is uncomplicated, yet there's a lot of meaning behind it. Her upper-middle-class English characters are all absorbed in their own mundane lives, until the arrival of Louise literally shakes them all up. Louise is obviously not meant to be a sympathetic character (unlike Ruth in Susan Glaspell's Fidelity); and at times she devolves into the stereotypical "other woman." Much more preferable is Ellen, the sensible English housewife who finds her life shattered during the after the divorce.

It's a sad subject, yet there are some truly funny moments; the surly Miss Daley going postal on Louise is an example that comes to mind. So in the end, each of the characters get what they deserve--even Avery, towards whom I feel a bit ambivalent. I feel as though he simply sat back and let things happen to him, rather than be an active member of the cast of characters.

It's interesting that I've chosen to read this book now, so shortly after reading another Persephone title, Fidelity--it's the story of an extramarital affair as told from the conventional point of view. Despite my feelings towards Avery and Louise, I though many of the other characters were well-drawn. Whipple's description of the angst teenage Anne goes through is very real, as are the difficulties that Ellen must feel as she prepares for a life alone. After all, she's been married for twenty years, and she's never had a job or had to pay her own bills; how will she cope? It's funny, then, how Ellen ultimately finds solace in a group of elderly ladies. Like the other Whipple novel I've read, The Priory, this is not a novel in which much "happens," but it's a powerfully emotional novel. Whipple's prose is simple, as I've said, but her way with words is absolutely stellar. She really knew how to play on her readers' emotions, so that you feel invested in the lives of her characters.

From Publishers Weekly
Along with reciprocal trust and shared power, dialogue between equals "on a personal and public level" is essential to the experience of full intimacy in heterosexual relationships. So argues Jungian therapist and feminist Young-Eisendrath ( Hags and Heroes ) in this persuasive guide. In accessible language, she demonstrates that culture, not biology, promotes the gender-based stereotypes that, along with shattered dreams, often prevent couples from establishing true intimacy. The reader sits in on intensive sessions of "dialogue therapy" as practiced by the author and her social worker husband, Ed Epstein, with four composite couples. In addition to aiding the husbands and wives in facing their own and each other's limitations and negative feelings, these dialogues are intended to foster "mature dependence" and to lead the couples to the recognition that attachment and suffering go together.

In a class all its own
By Kasha Frese
Dr. Young-Eisendrath's thesis is that ours is the first era in history when men and women en masse have the potential to have emotionally intimate, honest relationships. In the past the power in a male-female relationship was too off balance for true intimacy.
Since this potential is a recent phenomenon, very few models exist for a gender-opposite relationship based on equality. The good doctor builds such a model, based on extensive research, and it is flexible enough for all of us.

An Important Premise
By R. MARK Plummer
Wow! I cannot believe this phenomenal book has only one review (so far, or right now) I ordered it after reading another title by the same author ('Resilient Spirit' - another very worthwhile book, by the way, about transforming suffering into growth & insight... and that topic applies to just about everybody on the planet, eh? After all, the very fundamental premise of Buddhism is that suffering is a cold hard fact. How we learn to deal with it, understand it, approach it, and ourselves, etc is the important work of each lifetime and yes in addition to being a Jungian analyst the author is also a follower of the Buddhist path.) Now, back to this book: I ordered it after reading 'Resilient Spirit' and by the time I had read the first 100 or so pages I wanted to share it with nearly everyone I know... I was thinking "Everyone could benefit from this!" I ended up loaning my copy to my therapist who immediately made many approving sounds about the author's premise (at least in the introduction).

Seriously, anyone who is in a relationship, married, dating, whatever, could benefit from what Ms Eisendrath shares in this book. It won't necessarily be an easy ride but it will open up some (many!) eyes and many hearts (hopefully!) with it's clear and patient wisdom. AND the amazing thing is - looking at the prices above here... one can have a copy of this for less that is cost to print the thing!

Eisendrath's basic premise in "You're Not What I Expected" starts with true gender equality which historically has not been possible until recently because of entrenched cultural attitudes and biases. Let's grow, let's evolve, let's move into the next logical phase of human development (one that is long long overdue!) by taking advantage of this historical opportunity for actual equality and real partnership with our most intimate companions. If you've read Riane Eisler's "Power of Partnership" check this book, it is sure to be of interest to you and will expand your thinking (and feeling) on a topic that it both important and "close to home."
