A must read for Christians

What I love about this book is that it is full of stories bearing witness to the power and grace of God poured into a community. As the authors keep emphasising, the power is not in prayer or people ministering, but in God himself. Not only is the content just mind boggling, this book is not "put down able", as it works from the present back into the history of the place. A sceptical reader can quickly put any reservations aside, as the phenomena of God's blessings are put into the context of Scripture. It is written with such humility, honesty and wit, that it almost feels like you are sitting in the described kitchen having tea and scones at the place yourself.
A refreshing read and approach to a biblical Christianity that puts God in his rightful place. Full of practical advice and encouragement to follow a lifestyle of blessing others..

Changed my thinking (and acting) regarding how and whom to bless

I highly recommend this book, it had one of the biggest impacts on me of books I've read in the last few years.

For one, it helped me see the power and authority of speaking blessing to others. And how I sometimes withhold blessing others if I think their behavior doesn't warrant it - and how that is being judgmental. Scripture says bless your enemies (Rom 12:14) and Paul said he when he is cursed he blesses (1 Cor 4:12). How many are really purposeful about doing that today? And yet, that is being like God our Father.

The book tells the amazing, true story of the great work God is doing through a house of prayer/retreat center in Wales. I'm looking forward to being there to visit it in two weeks! Wales has a great history of spiritual revivals - a land with some spiritual ground well plowed by prayer. Also where my ancestors are from - I'm looking forward to asking the Lord to receive a spiritual inheritance while there.

The book is easy to read, flows well. And I especially liked the humble spirit with which the story is told. The emphasis is on what God has done through willing people, not on what any individual has accomplished.

There are multiple examples that you can pick up an incorporate into your own life - from how to bless others to letting someone interact directly with God rather than always being the center of the discussion yourself.

The book is about local houses of prayer which are corporate places open to all. Although not specifically mentioned in the book, I believe that discussion also has things that can be used in your own home to move it towards becoming a "local home of prayer" where there is a rhythm of prayer so that it is a place of stronger Presence and spiritual influence in the neighborhood. Imagine if homes all over the world were experiencing the same thing described in the book!

One example to apply is how Roy the director talks about how God led them to anoint/dedicate/cleanse their place by speaking the name of Jesus into every room, pressing the blood of Jesus into it, and declare it "straight" in the spiritual realm. A good practice for a home too...I think that can change the balance of power in a place spiritually - the authority of Jesus, the righteousness of the blood, and the dedication and straightening of the place into alignment with the purposes and reality of the kingdom of God is also like plowing the ground of a physical place and preparing it to receive more of the Presence of God when and how he wants to operate in that place.

Important and inspirational tale of a young woman who defied slavery

Harriet Tubman has to rate as one of the most amazing heroines in history. A slave born in America in about 1820, (I say about as she never really new her birth date). She was always fired with a stronger will than her 'master' and 'mistress' liked. As a very young girl she was taken to the big house but she never got on with the mistress. She ended up whipped and sent back to be a field hand. She was short, but she worked so hard she soon was capable of doing a mans work. However she never wished to bow her head to any one.

When she was quite young she helped another slave escape and in the process was badly injured. Despite leaving her with sudden sleeping spells she escaped and went on to join the freedom train. Her inspirational way, strength and sheer will made her extremely successful at freeing many others - even when they eventually had to take the 'train' all the way to Canada. She even helped her elderly parents escape.

This is as much a story of slavery in America as this outlines the background of what Harriet was doing. Why she suddenly had to take her 'passengers' beyond the Delaware border to Canada. The wrangling of the slave-owning congress who wanted all slaves returned, that Lincoln refused to allow black troops in the civil war at first - and paid them only 2/3rds of what the white troops were earning.

It also talks about Harriet's life after the end of the civl war and her support of her family, friends and freedmen institutions to better her community.

This is a very well written, informative and entertaining book suitable for 8-12 year olds and I would highly recommend it. It is inpirational - about a girl who would not give up hope and when she could acted on it. I really liked the fact that this story is about someone who actually made change. This is not a glamouress herione, but one who really changed the face of America.

In the beginning of the book Harriet Tubman was planning how to escape from slavery. She worked on a plantation in the south like so many other slaves. Harriet Tubman escaped with another slave and they got caught a white man hit Harriet in the head with a heavy object which caused her to have a concusion. When she got better she tried it again and made it to the north, were she got a job. She went back and got her family and friends. Harriet started making friends on the way that would help her and other slaves escape to the north, so Harriet started going back to the south and freeing slaves. She freed more then 300 slaves over the year.
Also Harriet fought in the army, became a nurse in an Negro hospital and trained other women to be nurses and founded the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She was a very tall black women that could not read or write. But she did so much for the slaves and to help free them.

An unforgetable masterpiece.

A wonderful book. When I say masterpiece, I mean masterpiece. A brillent true story of a brave young woman who lives in the hearts of children as a role model. When I read the book I felt like I was really there. It is very realistic. Harriet Tubman is an exellent book. Read it!

For Business Owners of all shapes and sizes, you must Read!

Mark Cuban was right! If you were to hire or have an option to read this book over getting an MBA. I would choose this book 100% of the time. I definitely have a better foundation of running a better business and this book opened up my eyes and mind. I would compare reading this book to a movie called "Limitless" where an individual takes a drug that expands and opens up new intelligence he didn't know existed. Now I now what lies ahead of me. Also a Chicago business owner, I want to say a special Thank You to Jason Fried and everyone who put this book together for business owners of all shapes and sizes.

enjoyable but lacks depth

I thoroughly like the spirit with which this is written and I will probably read it another time. While agreeing with and sometimes even often laughing about things they said, I felt left just a bit unsatisfied. A lot they say is actually quite smart and inventive, but it lacks the depth of for example Think and Grow Rich.

Light and fluffy, read it but spend more time working.

A little heavy on the platitudes, large type and line art and not very dense with information.

If you've really been out of the loop on doing startup work for the last five years or so this book will be valuable and it's true you can read the whole thing in 1-2 hours.

Like anything the real effort is working to apply some of the ideas to your own situation.

The corporate world has been very broken from an individual productivity standpoint for a long time.

Galbraith published some great material on the absurdity of "meetings" in 1954 as a sidebar in The Great Crash 1929.

Another great Kitty read!

Loved it! Another great story from Kitty Thomas! Two broken people come together under the most unlikely circumstances. Brian is a sadistic monster. Mina is a fragile woman who's looking for something she no longer believes exists: a gentle master. Their relationship should never happen, yet it somehow makes sense.

It's 3:30 in the morning and I'm speechless. This book was a total mind bender. Brian reminded me of an even more twisted version of Dexter. Both he and Mina are beyond repair, and I like how Thomas didn't wrap it up with rainbows and sunshine. Broken Dolls is a fitting title.

Violent, provocative, and suspenseful to the last page. I'm rarely disappointed with Kitty Thomas' work, and Broken Dolls is no exception. 4.5 stars!

why did i think this was dark erotica? oh yes, because all of kitty's other books are. it wasnt until 60% into Broken Dolls that anything even remotely erotic happens, and brief at that. i also found Mina's need (or the author's) to keep reminding us (the reader) of her abusive past annoying. we get it. and her need to keep reminding us that she feels as a result of that, that all future experiences are going to be the same, over and over again. i read Guilty Pleasures And loved it. even the writing style in BD did not compare to the calibur that i have loved from kitty's previous work. dissappointed in this one and frankly bored. I'm sorrykitty but please go back to What you've always done. intrigue me with your complex taboo writing. this is not it.

Excellent for 800 Seekers

Other reviewers have hinted at it, and I'll go ahead and state it explicitly: this book is overkill. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. The book provides a very detailed review of the math on the test, and the practice tests are far more difficult and involved than the actual test.

If you're looking for a good score on the Math Level 2 Subject Test, you don't need this book. The review is too detailed and the tests are too demanding. If you're looking for an 800, though, this is exactly the book you'll want. It prepares you for the one or two questions on the test that most test-takers won't even attempt, the one or two questions that could be the difference between a 790 and an 800. You'll cover things, like the latus rectum of a hyperbola, that probably won't show up on the test, but you'll be ready if they do.

The real strength of this book is in its solutions. It provides detailed solutions to each example problem and each problem on the practice tests. I found it very helpful to read through these solutions for every problem, even those I got right. In several cases, I found that the authors used a faster and more efficient technique. The book really emphasizes these techniques as a way to increase both speed and accuracy. In particular, it places heavy emphasis on leveraging the graphing calculator to solve problems.

I've come to expect that a test prep book will give a basic review of material, some generic "tips" (make educated guesses, use the process of elimination, etc.), and provide a couple of practice tests. This book goes far beyond that with a detailed and comprehensive review, clever techniques and methods that are actually helpful, and six challenging (but in the style of the subject test) practice tests with detailed solutions.

If you want the 800 and you're willing to put in the effort, this book is the way to go.

Hard but worth it

I used the book to prepare for the Math SAT II after being told that it was way harder than the actual test. It was! The highest score I got in the book was a 690 (I took four of the seven practice tests), but on the actual test I got an 800. I can't not recommend the book after getting that score, but I'm pretty advanced in math and for anyone who has more difficulty, the book would have been very frustrating because it covers more complex material that may not be on the actual test. A great review for anyone determined to get the top score.

How to get an 800

This is the best SAT II math 2 prep book out there. Although the problems were a bit challenging and some trivial than of the actual test, this book is perfect. It provides lucid explainations and it is very thorough. Also, don't be too discouraged when you don't do too well on the practice tests. For me, I scored around 670 on my first practice test and my highest score in this book was 720. On the day of the test, I was able to finish the test with around 10 minutes left over. I only missed one problem and omittied a question, nevertheless I still scored an 800. This book with unequivocally is the best there is for SAT II Math level 2.

First-rate speculations from a true philosopher

I cannot but recommend all of Klein's works, among which this one. This work is a collection of essays and lectures on matters of liberal education, ranging from Vergil, to the principles underlying the philosophy of Leibniz, to fascinating analyses of Plato's dialogues. Klein spent the better part of his career as a tutor at St. John's College, teaching the Great Books. His knowledge of Greek, combined with an acute mind, and a very wide reading, makes him an unparalleled expositor of the ideas that have shaped and reshaped the Western world. As each chapter attacks a different problem, the book is a convenient read. The various chapters are connected by Klein's brilliance, but otherwise do not depend essentially upon each other. Nevertheless, I could not point out a single topic that was not of value.

It's too bad Amazon doesn't have this in stock. This is a gem. Klein fosters wonder. He raises important questions, leads you in inquiry, and spurs you on to inquire more. He led me back to Euclid; for that alone I owe him a debt of gratitude. Like Pieper, he cannot be overrated, I think.

All these essays are worth rereading from time to time. Some are beyond my scope (e.g. I lack the grammar for following Copernicus and their are too many things already on my plate to find time to acquire it).

I'm grateful to him.
