It's growing on me!

The title says it all. When I first scanned this book, I was more than a little disappointed. I thought it spent way too much time discussing details of primitive things like hooking up the cables, programming the SD card, etc. And not near enough about the "good stuff" like programming in C and assembly language. Not even Python. I didn't expect a tutorial in C programming, but I had hoped for at least a mention of GNU, gcc, and gdb.

Disappointed, I set the book aside and set out to find out for myself, using Google and other books, the things I needed to know.

Not being a Linux person, I had a lot to learn. I could use the bash shell, but only enough to do primitive things. I wanted to personalize my Pi, setting it up with larger fonts and a good screen editor. I had flubbed my first pass through the setup program, raspi-config, and wanted another go. I spent a LOT of time in Google and in emails, hoping to find answers to my questions, but only found more questions.

But recently, I took another look at the book. Imagine my surprise to discover that it answered EVERY SINGLE ONE of the questions I'd amassed over the last few months. It wasn't a matter of the book not meeting my needs; it was a matter of the fact that I didn't even know what my needs were.

The first step in getting answers to any question is to know enough to ask it. On my first pass through the book, all those answers went right over my head. It's only been on the second reading that I've discovered just how helpful it is.

If you are already a Linux wizard, can speak grep and makefile in your sleep, and want to write the next killer app, this book is not for you. But if you're new to Linux, and want to make your Pi a more comfortable environment, I can't recommend it enough.

This book is dated. The Raspberry PI has seen a number of updates which have using the Pi for a measurement system interfacing to hardware using the SPI or I2C extremely difficult.

In this new book Dr.St.Just expands and makes a critical contribution to not only the study of social trauma but to a more general wisdom as well. Exploring the nature of time itself, she brilliantly describes how historical forces diminish our possibilities of peace and reconcilliation.

I am excited to recommend this book for those who would like to more comprehensively understand and more clearly see the possibilities of deep resolution not only of what is occurring within our own psyches but also in the different levels of the worlds we inhabit.

fast and easy reading on complex and deep dynamics.......

That are rarely addressed in our culture. How is it the the Japanese, a country devastated by US nuclear bombs, could be persuaded to build 48+ nuclear reactors in an earthquake vulnerable area? Though I never thought about it until I read it in the pages of this book, the answer to that question is worthy of pursuit and can explain a lot about what happens in our world. Answering that question completely will lead you to many books and thoughtful analysis, but the question was raised by Angwynn St Just, and the answer deserves to be recognized, particularly by those who are trying slow the devastation seen daily on our tv news. I recommend all St Just's books, we all need help and each other to maintain Relative Balance in an Unstable World.

Hobo's and the Great Depression

Orphan! is a wonderful coming of age story about two thirteen year old boys growing up during the great depression coming from rural Iowa and learning about the larger world on a cross country trip.

Homer and Jamie, the two 13-year old protagonists, are engaging characters whose odyssey is reminiscent of the Greek myths and Odysseus' journeys. The characters of Smilin' Jack, Lottie, Anne, Coretta, and Sam were all memorable and full of life. I really enjoy historical novels that come off the page and Orphan! did just that. I would be remiss if I didn't also say that I found the hobo culture as depicted in the novel to be absolutely fascinating and such a great vehicle for the story. I also like the way the author wove the flu epidemic into all of the character's memories, so much the way HIV/AIDS is in ours and Polio was in and around WWII. As an HIV worker for the past twenty years in NYC I can't help but notice the parallels and wonder at them. All of these historical details made the story richer without taking away from the narrative. I looked forward to reading each new page to find out what would happen to the two boys. This is a good read for adults interested in the time period and for YA's looking for a novel with adventures in a colorful and intriguing land.

A moving read

Orphan is a compelling story about a young boy’s identity, adaptability, and courage. Homer and Jamie are so intriguing that I wanted to keep flipping the pages to find out more and more about them.They are endearing, bright, and sensitive. The author does a brilliant job weaving their stories together.

The author has filled the novel with rich details of history from the hobo culture and the Great Depression era. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in reading about these topics from the point of view of a child.

John Weber's book Orphan! successfully delivers a great story for adults or young adults. The characters are compelling and memorable, especially Jaime and Homer, and the historical information about the orphan trains is very well researched. It's an adventure and a history lesson. I loved it and highly recommend it.

4.25 stars--SHATTERED is the third instalment in Cynthia Eden's contemporary, adult LOST romantic suspense series focusing on the men and women of LOST (Last Option Search Team). This is criminal psychologist Dr. Sarah Jacobs, and dark and dangerous businessman Jax Fontaine's storyline. Although SHATTERED is the third in the series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

Told from several third person perspectives SHATTERED focuses on a killer who has targeted both Sarah Jacobs and Jax Fontaine. Sarah's past is mired in death; a guilt she harbours for the sins of another, and with it comes Sarah's resolve of acceptance for something of which she was never responsible. When a series of copy cat killings hits too close to home, Sarah finds herself partnered with Jax Fontaine -a man with an even darker past and dangerous secrets. As the threats against Sarah begin to escalate, the police begin to look at Jax as a possible suspect when all of the clues lead back to the man in question.

The relationship between Sarah and Jax is one of mutual attraction. The sexual energy is palpable; Jax is a man who knows what he wants, and he wants Sarah for now and in the future. Jax is an enigma; a sexy but dangerous man whose power and energy commands respect as well as doubt about his true intent. The $ex scenes are provocative and seductive. Sarah and Jax were first introduced to the reader in the previous story lines when Jax's prior relationship with Emma Castille (Twisted #2) resulted in jealousy and emotional turmoil for Emma and former FBI agent Dean Bannon. Forensic specialist Victoria Palmer's story is building; her attraction and potential future with former detective Wade Monroe is gathering steam; Victoria may be a serial killer's next intended victim-a serial killer that is all too familiar to Victoria Palmer.

SHATTERED is a fast paced, intense, romantic suspense storyline with a series of twists and turns; a thriller where there is more to the story; a mystery about the who, where and why. Cynthia Eden pushes the proverbial envelope with her amazing ability to keep the reader in suspense until the very end.

This is a book that will stay with you after you are done. I loved this book and it picks up right where Book #2 lets off. The storyline is gripping and keeps you on the edge of your seat while you are reading it. I kept trying to read faster because I could not wait to see what would happen next, but then when I finished I wished I had read slower because I didn't want it to end. Sarah and Jax are super together and so well written they seem to take you along with them on their crazy thrilling ride! Since these were the last two single characters we knew it had to include at least one of them in a romance, but why include only one when you can get both? Loved the way they work together both on cases and romantically. If you are looking for a romantic suspense novel to read that will keep you glued to the pages, this is it!

This is the third book in the series. While I do think this can be read as a standalone, I have read the previous two and enjoyed them, and I think it does make the characters more meaningful, so I highly suggest reading this series in order. As I have said before Cynthia Eden’s books are like crack for me. They are addictive, with a quick short high, that doesn’t last long, and leaves you scrambling for the next one, often with very little memory of that previous high. Fortunately for us readers, book crack is not in fact actual crack, and so we are free to indulge as we please and as often as we please.

LOST, Last Option Search Team, is a group that finds the missing. All the members have their demons, their secrets, for why they ended up where they are now. Dr. Jacobs secrets seemed to be darker, the way she can put her self into the minds of killers and the hints about her past, and that seeming couldn’t have been more true. I’ll admit though, I was kind of hoping she’d end up with guilt stricken good guy Wade, but this was so much better.

Jax Fontaine has secrets, secrets from those around him, and secrets even from himself. He’s dark, and edgy, and oft times brutal. But he can handle Sarah’s darkness. And from my perspective, he’s sexy and I could just eat him up. However, I am completely unsure who the hell that man on the cover is supposed to be, because it certainly isn’t Jax Fontaine,

So let me get the negatives out of the way first. For those who are bothered, this is sort of insta-love, or at least insta-lust. Granted it started in the previous book, but that only adds a couple of days to their relationship. It worked fine for me, but your mileage may vary. There was also a rather lackadaisical approach to birth control that I was less than pleased with. But that is my particular hot button, so again, YMMV.

But on to the good. This book was a roller coaster of twists and turns. Just absolutely dozens of twists and turns. By the end of it was completely shocked by who the villain turned out to be, and that doesn’t happen too often. I may not completely guess, but they are almost always on my radar. This one just hit me with several blind sides. The chemistry between the two main characters was smoking and sweet. We got just enough glimpses to be sure previous couples were still on the right path to their happily ever afters without it being so much that it overwhelms the current story, or that I think it would be intrusive to new readers. And like I said, the action and the mystery kept me absolutely riveted.

Eden’s romantic suspense don’t usually hit my re-read shelves, they just aren’t that compelling or deep. But they are always consistent and I devour them gleefully because she never lets me down. She’s probably also one of the more prolific writers on my must read list with over 60 titles between her paranormal and her romantic suspense lines, and I haven’t had a true dud yet. So for a book crack dealer, she’s always my best bet. Shattered is great addition for the addicted, and I can’t wait for Victoria and Wade’s respective stories.

Although not my major, this textbook was required for one of my elective courses and it is very interesting. I liked the "Historical Note" sections here and there. I'm do not have a science background, but the text was not hard to understand. I do recommend getting the cheapest possible, textbooks are quite expensive unfortunately (especially if you are not majoring in this subject)

There is no better reference on solid-state semiconductors for the practising EE.
