It's growing on me!

The title says it all. When I first scanned this book, I was more than a little disappointed. I thought it spent way too much time discussing details of primitive things like hooking up the cables, programming the SD card, etc. And not near enough about the "good stuff" like programming in C and assembly language. Not even Python. I didn't expect a tutorial in C programming, but I had hoped for at least a mention of GNU, gcc, and gdb.
Disappointed, I set the book aside and set out to find out for myself, using Google and other books, the things I needed to know.
Not being a Linux person, I had a lot to learn. I could use the bash shell, but only enough to do primitive things. I wanted to personalize my Pi, setting it up with larger fonts and a good screen editor. I had flubbed my first pass through the setup program, raspi-config, and wanted another go. I spent a LOT of time in Google and in emails, hoping to find answers to my questions, but only found more questions.
But recently, I took another look at the book. Imagine my surprise to discover that it answered EVERY SINGLE ONE of the questions I'd amassed over the last few months. It wasn't a matter of the book not meeting my needs; it was a matter of the fact that I didn't even know what my needs were.
The first step in getting answers to any question is to know enough to ask it. On my first pass through the book, all those answers went right over my head. It's only been on the second reading that I've discovered just how helpful it is.
If you are already a Linux wizard, can speak grep and makefile in your sleep, and want to write the next killer app, this book is not for you. But if you're new to Linux, and want to make your Pi a more comfortable environment, I can't recommend it enough.

Needs updating

This book is dated. The Raspberry PI has seen a number of updates which have using the Pi for a measurement system interfacing to hardware using the SPI or I2C extremely difficult.
