The book has been developed from courses taught to engineering, computer science and management science undergraduate and graduate students.

About the Author
Gianpaolo Ghiani is Associate Professor of Operations Research at the University of Lecce, Italy. His main research interests lie in the field of combinatorial optimization, particularly in vehicle routing, location and layout problems. He has published in a variety of journals, including Mathematical Programming, Operations Research Letters, Networks Transportation Science, Optimization Methods and Software, Computers and Operations Research, International Transactions in Operational research, European Journal of Operational Research, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Parallel Computing and Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing Systems. His doctoral thesis was awarded the Transportation Science Dissertation Award from INFORMS in 1998. He is an editorial board member of Computers & Operations Research.

Gilbert Laporte obtained his PhD in Operations Research at the London School of Economics in 1975. He is Professor of Operations Research at HEC Montréal, Director of the Canada Research Chair in Distribution Management, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Alberta. He is also a member of GERAD, of the Centre for Research on Transportation (serving as director from 1987 to 1991), and Fellow of the Center for Management of Operations and Logistics, University of Texas at Austin. He has authored or coauthored several books, as well as more then 225 scientific articles in combinatorial optimization, mostly in the areas of vehicle routing, location, districting and timetabling. He is the current editor of Computers and Operations Research and served as editor of Transportation Science from 1995 to 2002. He has received many scientific awards including the Pergamon Prize (United Kingdom), the Merit Award of the Canadian Operational Research Society, the CORS Practice Prize on two occasions, the Jacques-Rousseau Prize for Interdisciplinary, as well as the President's medal of the Operational Research Society (United Kingdom). In 1998 he became a member of the Royal Society of Canada.

Roberto Musmanno is Professor of Operations Research at the University of Calabria, Italy. His major research interests lie in logistics, network optimization and parallel computing. He has published n a variety of journals, including Operations Research, Transportation Science, Computational Optimization and Applications, Optimization Methods & Software, Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications, Optimization and Parallel Computing. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Center of Excellence of High Performance Computing, and an editorial board member of Computers & Operations Research.

I find this book, Starting a Nonprofit, very informative. This book will surely give the proper info for anyone who would like to venture on this undertaking. This book is essential to anyone learning how to view the Eye with a Slit Lamp. For Ophthalmic Photography
the book provides both illustrations and photographic examples to explain how to best document Eye Pathology
with a Slit Lamp and camera. I was involved in Eye Photography for 48 years and used this book often until I
retired and left it behind. I purchased this as a gift to a friend who had much experience with a Slit Lamp but no
Photography experience. In my opinion there is none better.

our freshly washed hair damp
and spiraling over toweled shoulders
and pale cotton nightgowns.
She opens her book to the marked page,
curls up in a chair pulled close
to the wood-burning stove, bowl of peanuts in her lap.
The words
in her books are so small, I have to squint
to see the letters. Hans Brinker or The Silver Skates.
The House at Pooh Corner. Swiss Family Robinson.
Thick books
dog-eared from the handing down from neighbor
to neighbor. My sister handles them gently,
marks the pages with torn brown pieces
of paper bag, wipes her hands before going
beyond the hardbound covers.
Read to me, I say, my eyes and scalp already stinging
from the tug of the brush through my hair.
And while my grandmother sets the hot comb
on the flame, heats it just enough to pull
my tight curls straighter, my sister’s voice
wafts over the kitchen,
past the smell of hair and oil and flame, settles
like a hand on my shoulder and holds me there.
I want silver skates like Hans’s, a place
on a desert island. I have never seen the ocean
but this, too, I can imagine—blue water pouring
over red dirt.
As my sister reads, the pictures begin forming
as though someone has turned on a television,
lowered the sound,
pulled it up close.
Grainy black-and-white pictures come slowly at me
Deep. Infinite. Remembered

Less than one day.

That is how long it took me to take the journey with Jacqueline Woodson through her book BROWN GIRL DREAMING---and boy was it worth every moment.

Woodson has a way of telling a story through words that is a true gift. Whether utilzing the simplicity of the Haiku like HOW TO LISTEN (Even the silence * has a story to tell you. * Just listen. Listen) or sharing a narrative about God, Family or Herself, we are able to get snapshots into what helped her become the woman she is today.

There are the clever poems about her identity and wanting an afro as well as the realization of wanting to be a writer and how some might see that as not wanting enough. There are the poems I can definitely connect with about Faith and God and wanting to please Him---and not wanting to leave others that we love behind.

Real. Honest. Gorgeous Prose.

There is something so very real, honest, and about Jacqueline Woodson’s writing, regardless of what she’s writing about in “Brown Girl Dreaming.” Her prose contains heartrending stories, thoughts, musings, and emotions ranging from bliss to anger. There’s a childlike purity in her work, these snippets of thoughts that tell her story, stories… the story of her family, friends, her beliefs, her religion.

Growing up in the south in an era where so much change was taking place, where children were surrounded from the outside with the message to be proud, and where the message from the older generation was still to avoid eye contact, you might expect more anger, more focus on the ugly side of that time. It’s not glossed over, it’s that the focus for those years shared in “Brown Girl Dreaming” is love for the place, the people and her memories. The nostalgia is sweet without sacrificing any truth, her power in the restraint she shows.

“The first time I write my full name Jacqueline Amanda Woodson without anybody’s help on a clean white page in composition notebook, I know if I wanted to I could write anything. Letters becoming words, words gathering meaning, becoming thoughts outside my head becoming sentences written by Jacqueline Amanda Woodson.”

A Childhood Beautifully Written

This book came to my notice because it just won the National Book Award. I wanted to see what an award-winning young person's book was like. The book itself is a delightful childhood biography as young Jacqueline grows up in South Carolina and New York City. The book is written in free verse. It wasn't till I was halfway through that I realized that this was the perfect way to write it as everyone remembers their childhood as small vignettes, not as lengthy, continuing narrative. And while her young life is thoroughly ordinary, the stories she remembers imbues her childhood with a warmth and "extraordinariness" that's undeniable. Probably everyone's childhood would be seen this way if we only stopped to reflect and remember our stories and the people in them. To be honest, I'd like to meet the child who would relish this nonfiction biography. Hopefully, African American children could relate. Jacqueline grew up during the Civil Rights era. But with many kids today having a fast-paced video game mentality, would they slow down to savor the beautiful writing and stories in this book? I hope so. It's definitely worth the effort. Highly recommended for children especially if read and reread aloud. Recommended for adults - particularly aging boomers - as we look back on our extraordinary, ordinary lives.

This is a historically accurate account of the sinking of the Yamato and strike by US Naval forces April 7, 1945 derived from first hand accounts by personal conversation with the men who participated in the attack as well as the combat action report from VF-17 records. Included is a copy of the original VF-17 Combat Action Report describing the attack, the ship positions, pilots participating and a signed copy of the main character (Lt. (jg) Good) April 1945 logbook.

About the Author
Compton Mackenzie was born in West Hartlepool in 1883. He was educated at St Paul's School and Magdalen College, Oxford. During the First World War he became a Captain in the Royal Marines, becoming Director of the Aegean Intelligence Service. He wrote more than ninety books - novels, history and biography, essays and criticism, children's stories and verse, and was also an outstanding broadcaster. He founded and edited until 1961 the magazine the Gramophone, and was President of the Siamese Cat Club. He lived for many years on the island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, but later settled in Edinburgh. Compton Mackenzie died in 1972.

Highland Tale

For anyone familiar with the very popular BBC series Monarch of the Glen, much in this audio book will ring familiar. And, for those unfortunate not to be familiar with the series, the book will be an entree into the world of a Scottish Highland Chieftan of the 20th Century.
The tale takes place in Scotland in the early 1940's at the castle Glenbogle, the ancestral estate of the Clan MacDonald. The patriarch is a stodgy old Highlander trying to make the best of the 20th century, but with his values firmly planted 400 years earlier. There's a bit of everything in here, a love story, a battle, some history as to kilts and clans and highland lore. Quite of lot of Gaelic is spoken and by the end of the story some of it actually starts to sound familiar.
The narrator does an excellent job with the wide cast of characters ranging from Americans, to Brits and Scots. I found myself laughing out loud many times. It was a great "read" on my way to and from work.
A note of caution though for those who have seen the series: There is only a hint of similarity to the series, but don't let the name changes etc turn you off, the story in total could easily have taken place in the Glenbogle we've seen on film.

A great "prequel" for the TV series

If you're expecting to "see" Archie, Golly, Duncan, et al, they're not around...yet...in this audio version of MacKenzie's novel, which takes place between the two world wars.
Despite a bit of a slow start, the book is a hoot and will definitely get you through a long car trip, or many long commutes! David Rintoul's reading is excellent and never monotonous. You'll get a good flavour of Highland life and traditions and have more than a few laughs.

good clean fun

I had never heard of Compton Mackenzie until a few years ago when I rescued a copy of "Hunting the Fairies" from a newspaper recycling bin (a guy in our town died and his idiot family dumped his book collection---I rescued hundreds for our library book sale.) "Hunting the Fairies" was that rare book which made me laugh out loud and also feel warm and uplifted. The Monarch of the Glen continues with some of the same characters and has the same humanity and wit. The humor is gentle but not sappy, satirical but not mean, and the characters are keenly observed from real life. This book is a very entertaining read, plus you'll learn a thing or two about Scottish history and culture.
