Required Reading for Physics Students!

I consider this book a gem.
The forthright explanations of mechanistic systems, both deterministic and indeterministic, will help to awaken any student of physics as to the degree to which their world-view may not be as broad as they had imagined.
The concerns raised about quantum mechanics are not trivial or extreme. And they are raised with deliberation and humility. Likewise, so are Bohm's suggested solutions.
Finally, and most importantly I think, the argument for a world-view of physics that presumes - as the most scientifically (investigationally speaking) useful view to take - that the universe is comprised of an infinite number of levels of depth and complexity. Perhaps there are not an infinite number of levels of reality, but to presuppose there is opens the mind to want to investigate what they might be. Thus, supposing that QM defines and "explains" the 'bottom' of reality is first, not a logically strong position (just as Brownian motion formulas do not "explain" such motion as a fundamental aspect of nature) and secondly, such a view is scientifically inhibiting: supposing that QM *is* the bottom level of reality is rather silly in light of our historical knowledge of how humans have consistently misjudged the 'fundamental' aspects of nature in the past, and supposing we have reached it now via QM is a dubious claim. Further, even the issue of determinism vs. indeterminism may be a moot point: it may be at a lower level of reality, there is no such distinction - we may be seeing those two 'macroscopic' aspects of a more basic or inclusive feature of reality.
If you want to be an original thinker in physics (or perhaps any science or philosophy), this book is a good starting point to help you realize how easily assumptions of the nature of reality slip past our awareness.

Defense of Hidden Variables

Bohm in this book attacks to Standard Interpretation of Quantum Physics. He starts with definition of Physical Theories, Laws of Nature, discusses Statistical Mechanics and goes into Deterministic Mechanicstic Philosophys and indeterminist Mechanistic Philosophy. He attackes Bohr and Heisenberg on their stand that Uncertainity Principal is the rule of the nature and foundation of Quantum Physics.Claims it is not conclusively proven as a rule and than argues that one can always find new Theory that can be fundemantally different from Uncertainity Principle, yet could explain nature better and yields current Quantum Physics as complimentarity. Although he claims that Heisenberg's claim is with no foundation, I believe he fails to prove that Nature can not be explained completely with limited number of laws and concepts.His argument against Heisenberg could be reversed and used against his own argument

Bohm's Anti-Mechanistic Manifesto

I think this is the best book about the fundamental assumptions of science I have ever read. David Bohm is one of the wisest and open-minded thinkers I've ever encountered. He believes that science should be based on the assumption of the "qualitative infinity of nature." We shouldn't assume that anything is what it is absolutely. "Any given set of qualities and properties of matter and categories of laws expressed in terms of these qualities and properties is applicable only within limited contexts, over limited ranges of conditions and to limited degrees of approximation...." The continued existence of any entity or property depends on a balance of the processes tending to change it in different directions. "The broader the context or longer period of time, the more opportunity for that balance to be fundamentally altered." This is consistent with what the process philosophers have told us: Being is just an abstraction from becoming.

Scientific laws can apply only conditionally, not absolutely; they are always subject to revision. We should doubt that any description of "elementary particles" or statement of laws governing them could constitute a full and final description of reality. We should also doubt that we can know the universe's future: "the prediction of the 'heat death' of the universe will probably be invalidated by qualitatively new developments reflecting the inexhaustible and infinite character of the universal process of becoming."

Much of Bohm's book is a critique of the philosophy of mechanism, which he regards as an unjustified extrapolation from science's success in discovering certain conditional mechanistic relationships. Mechanism aims to reduce everything to interactions between basic entities with fixed qualities, like the parts of a machine. This overlooks another kind of relation, the "reciprocal relationship" between an entity and the broader context that makes it what it is. The earliest forms of mechanism were deterministic, assuming that the future could be calculated from the initial positions and velocities of entities and the forces acting upon them. Bohm does not confine his critique to deterministic mechanism, but extends it to the indeterministic mechanism of quantum mechanics. The conventional interpretation of QM attributes an absolute and final validity to the indeterminacy principle, so that only a statistical description of reality is permitted and no causal interpretation of phenomena is even pursued. Bohm regards causality and chance--necessary causes and chance contingencies--as two aspects of all processes. Any theory that embraces one to the exclusion of the other is inherently incomplete. "Neither causal laws nor laws of chance can ever be perfectly correct, because each inevitably leaves out some aspect of what is happening in broader contexts." That's why Bohm has led the search for a "hidden variables" interpretation of QM. In the end, Bohm regards the mechanistic philosophy in all its forms as contrary to the spirit of scientific inquiry, since it tends to regard a limited truth as the whole truth. "The essential character of scientific research is that it moves towards the absolute by studying the relative, in its inexhaustible multiplicity and diversity."

In contrast to the mechanistic philosophy, Bohm proposes a more holistic and organic view. "The inter-relationships of the parts (or sub-wholes) within a system depend crucially on the state of the whole, in a way that is not expressible in terms of properties of the parts alone. Indeed, the parts are organized in ways that flow out of the whole. The usual mechanistic notion that the organization, and indeed, the entire behaviour, of the whole derives solely from the parts and their predetermined inter-relationships thus breaks down."

This is a really great storyline. I waited to read both books in ...

This is a really great storyline. I waited to read both books in the series, so this will be an amalgamation of the story as an entirety. The fact that I read the second book tells you that the story itself is engaging, fun and worthwhile. The author has talent and does a good job at bringing characters to life. The sixteen year old acts like a sixteen year old, which meant that as a mother of a teen myself, there were times I wanted to knock her upside her head. I appreciate the fact that the hero waited for the heroine to mature... mostly. They kinda pushed the "age of majority" factor, but I get that other cultures are different, (not to mention some of the experiences she'd gone through) so I tried to let it go. I liked the setting. I liked the world. I liked the pack. Markus eventually became one of my favorite characters.

However, there were some frustrating factors. Mostly, that this came across as a rough draft. There were editing issues, words that "word" would have let pass that several Betas and an editor could have caught. Scene choices that didn't make sense on occasion that, once again, discerning Betas and editors would have told the author "rework this scene/sentence/moment because it doesn't make sense/you weren't consistent/you're getting repetitive with your word choices". (The word "orbs" was used quite often for eyes.) Scene placement. There was an incredibly well written scene that had the potential to punch you in the gut and rip you apart emotionally... that didn't, simply because the author chose to tell in in flashback after already alerting you to the fact that the hero was still alive. So you're reading this battle and the entire time you know he's all right and I felt cheated because I *wanted* that scene to pack the punch it could have.

The author is talented. The world is rich with potential for many storylines. The secondary characters are really fun. If you like reading about a damsel in distress who constantly needs to be rescued, (who still fights with everything she's got the entire time- no standing around screaming uselessly), then this will be right up your alley. Be forgiving of the structure and the editing, and you will enjoy a story that paints a world around you.

This would have been 5 stars but for 2 things. It's already been said a good many times that there were many proofreading/editing flaws. It was worse in the second book in my opinion. The 2nd was that Katherine was likeable enough, and believable for a 16 year old character, though I wish maybe she started as 17 and her birthday made her 18 before everything that happened. However the biggest thing was the constant "trying to hold back tears" followed by crying. And more crying. Fitting for a 16 year old who had such a traumatic life, but this is why I wish her character would have been a bit older and a bit stronger. It got a little old having her be so weak and a crybaby. Maybe I'm being harsh though. Otherwise I really enjoyed the book(s).

I really found some aspects about the book lacking. I think the foundation had some things that I liked. I didn't enjoy the fact that Katherine is 16 at the start of the books, then turning 17. I know for the Weres she is considered an Adult, but I felt it was pushing it especially after having sex, she is still considered a minor. It just didn't settle with me. I felt like Katherine couldn't get a break, She kept getting attacked. How many times does one person get attacked or almost raped. Especially after starting to learn how to fight. I know if it was me, after so many slimy hands touching me, I don't know if I would really want any advances from Bastian. I felt like their relationship was underdeveloped. Because I read so many shiftier books, the terms of True Mate/Fated Mate is familiar with me. I felt like if I didn't truly understand what it was that I would be a bit confused. Could Bastian really die if Katherine was killed and they hadn't claimed each other yet? In fact some of the Were ideas were a bit vague. She also kept running away from situations. If female weres are so difficult to survive through, I felt hers was under stated. If it was so dangerous, then I expected more explaining, more details, just more instead of a lot of pain and then Oh! I got better. I also struggled with Kathrine's family. Meaning, after she leaves them, there is no mention of even wanting to contact them. She didn't even mention them again. Rouge ending was .... blah. I really think this book had great potential. But enough just through me off, and the typos (which I know I struggle with I do not profess my excellence with English and grammar, but with editors, arn't you paying them to catch the errors?). Just a few of my thoughts. Thanks!

This book changes your perception and life within minutes

This book was tough read, but not due to lack of literary merit. It was difficult to read, because of the accounts of so many victimized girls and women right in the very U.S.A where we live. I stand firmly corrected that Sex Trafficking and CSEC (Commercially, Sexually, Exploited Children) is not a Thailand, India, Russia, etc issue. It is a human issue. Rachel Lloyd captures the anguish and torment of young girls in vivid details. I was moved to rage and commitment to take action. I will never be the same after reading this book. I highly recommend it for readings not just in an academic setting, but in churches, schools, or just personal knowledge and awareness.

Every once in a while, a book comes along that is so powerfully written, it has the ability to cause you to change how you think, how you feel, and maybe even: how you act.
For me, such a book is Girls Like Us: Fighting For a World Where Girls Are Not for Sale, by Rachel Lloyd.
I recently completed a 60-hour training course on Crisis Intervention, in order to work with victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and/or elder abuse. One of our sessions focused on human sex trafficking, and this book was recommended by our phenomenal presenter, who works with victims of such trafficking.
The session opened my eyes to the "top layer" of misconceptions around sex trafficking -- especially with regard to children. For example, I think many (most?) of us believe that only women from other countries are forced into prostitution here in the United States. Reading the book opened my eyes to the entire landscape of a devastating underworld that is closer to home than most of us realize.
Over 70% of all those forced into (and I do mean forced) sex work in the United States are Americans. This book, written by such a victim, who now works tirelessly as an advocate for these voiceless victims, puts a bald but factual face on the many "myths" surrounding those in the "sex trade." Just a few examples: that prostitutes choose "the life" (as it is known in the vernacular), that prostitutes are from low socio-economic backgrounds, that prostitutes are runaways, that prostitutes "do it because they like it," that prostitutes stay in the life because of the money they can make, especially when they have no other skills, that prostitutes are "asking for it" when they are beaten/raped/humiliated by their "johns" and/or pimps because after all: they should have known what they were getting into when they "became" prostitutes.
I read this book from cover to cover in two sittings, unable to turn away from it. It is passionately and compassionately written by a woman who has successfully led the fight to pass critically important legislation regarding sex work. One of the latest developments we learned about in our training was that - nowadays -- minors (boys and girls under the age of 18) do NOT have to prove they were "coerced or forced" into the trade. And this is because: by definition, a minor does not have the necessary resources or skills to resist being lured into the sex trade, especially when they are convinced they have no other option.
If you possess an open mind and an open heart, I promise this book will change you, and in very important ways. Even if you finish the book and simply change the vocabulary you use when referring to people in the sex trade, it will be a major step forward in the fight to stop human sex trafficking.
I am not a political person, and I rarely get up on a soapbox, but I will make an exception here. Tomorrow, Valentine's Day, is one that will be marked all over our country by people who are standing up against sex trafficking and violence in that world. It is called the "One Billion Rising," an international call to action that focuses on ending violence and sexual assault against women all over the world. For more information, please go to VDAY.org. The name of the event derives from the fact that human sex trafficking is a $1 billion/year business.

This is the first time since I began this blog that I am going to give a "current" book a 5-Worm Rating . . . . and believe me: it's not just because of the interest and passion it has stirred in me, but also because it is remarkably well written. I promise you will not walk away from this story untouched -- and in a hopeful way.

Couldn't put it down A+++++++

I've only recently become much of a reader.
My ADHD usually gets the best of me--five books at a time without finishing one.

This book will keep you on target and glued to your seat--so ADHD people take note :-)

As a male, hopefully it will help you understand that prostitutes are not commodities that you can buy, sell, and then go home.
Just because you pay for the service doesn't make it a legitimate business transaction--for that to happen it would have to be good for both the buyer and the seller. Transactions for the services of a prostitute aren't good for either party. (I'm a male)

I don't think anyone wakes up and suddenly realizes they've accomplished their childhood dreams by becoming a prostitute. This book will not only drive that point out of the park, but more importantly, it will help you to understand that it happens for a variety of reasons--and none of them are good.

The worst part of the whole picture is what happens after the dollars have changed hands--and what happens to make the sale possible.

For the ladies, I'm not one so I'm not sure what to say except maybe have your man read it--he needs to hear the message. Internet pornography is pushing a tsunami whether you realize it or not. That's not what the books about, but that's where it's going without awareness. I think this book provides a great starting place to help make men more aware of how their actions could have a catastrophic impact on another human being and their family. If they look at pornography long enough, they will most likely act out--it's not harmless. If you suspect they watch it or you've caught them there's a pretty good chance it's happening more frequently than you realize. Google some statistics--men are hardwired for visual stimulation,and that's what can get them in trouble. Sorry for the rant, this is a book review--but that's my take on the issue.

Dr. Donelson R. Forsyth is Professor and the Colonel Leo K. and Gaylee Thorsness Endowed Chair in Ethical Leadership in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies at the University of Richmond, where he teaches both graduate and undergraduate courses. His areas of focus include moral judgment, attribution, and group dynamics. His honors include the Outstanding Lecturer Award from the College of Humanities and Sciences and the Outstanding Teacher at Virginia Commonwealth University. A proven author, Dr. Forsyth has written more than 80 chapters and articles, published in such journals as AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGIST, JOURNAL OF PERSONALITY AND SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY QUARTERLY, and JOURNAL OF RESEARCH IN PERSONALITY. A member of numerous editorial boards, he is the founding editor of GROUP DYNAMICS: THEORY, RESEARCH, AND PRACTICE. He received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from the University of Florida.

Finally, a book that gives real and understandable examples!

While I'm only 4 chapters in, the book crams a lot of technical information in each. The information is made real in each chapter with a true story at the beginning which exemplifies each term/definition and flows throughout the chapter to give a more "real world" application. I have enjoyed it thus far.

Definitive Biography of an Obscure but Important King

This well researched academic study is the definitive biography of this obscure but important English king. In fact, it is the first substantial biography using all available sources, which is not many, to present as full a portrait of Athelstan as possible. Though not the first to make the claim this does present the emerging view of Athelstan as the first King of England rather than his great, great grandfather Egbert of Wessex holding that traditional position. Historian Sarah Foot also does much to remove Athelstan from the shadow of his very famous grandfather Alfred the Great. The thematic chapters are well done and the photos/illustrations are impressive.

Masterpiece - a great biography of a very great king and Christian hero - plus some new information, September 2014

Sarah Foot has done wonders. I discovered Aethelstan years ago. Yes indeed, he was a titan among European kings of the period c800 to 1050.

But a word about the author first, for she deserves great respect and applause for this elegant, sensitive and amazingly well-researched book. No stone among the sources of the 900s is left unturned. And she explores later stories with knowing tact and an understanding attitude to the frequent oddities of oral traditions - and the pure fabrications they often involve.

A word to American readers - please obtain this book and wallow in it with patience and pleasure. Aethelstan is a vital figure in your shared heritage with Britain.

The joy is in the details, and they are complex, revealing a Christian man of action at his work. It is full of insight and entertaining detail. It paints a picture of a society emerging from an age of chaos and uncertainty. This king seems to have sincerely committed himself to a mission- to heal a battered land, give relief and responsibility to his people and create a unified state based on Christian principles. The passages on his assorted law reforms, diplomatic influence in Europe and unrelenting work to unify England are striking.

His diplomacy and political patience is of great interest. He had a no-nonsense attitude to the Vikings and their allies and his war-making was effective. However, I suspect the author may have understated a couple of things. I honestly believe there was more to his supposed actions in driving the 'Welsh'(Cornish) from Exeter than meets the eye - it may have been the end result of a campaign in early 928, with the king then holding court and issuing decrees there in the spring.

And I think the war in Brittany from around 936 deserved more extensive treatment. I suspect Aethelstan gave more extensive help to Prince Alan in his war to drive out the Vikings than is usually admitted...the campaigning may even have complicated matters in the crisis of 937. But such matters are not major quibbles, just issues that will doubtless be discussed elsewhere as interest in Aethelstan's career and achievements increases in the coming years. And it will - Sarah Foot (perhaps helped by one or two other writers) has indeed brought him out into the light.

EXTRA INFO - I noted in the first version of my review that the war against the Vikings in Britanny may have complicated things for Athelstan during the great crisis of his reign in 937. I am now sure that supposition was correct. Athelstan helped Alan of Britanny to return to his homeland in 936 with ships and men - which meant English involvement. That being the case, English involvement was prolonged. The Annals of Flodoard of Reims mention severe fighting against the Viking occupiers of Britanny from 937 to 939 until the major viking stronghold was taken. More could be said, because there are other sources. The key point is that Athelstan took some time to muster his strength to defeat the Vikings in England during 937 because he was to some degree stretched to the limit re men and resources.

A great read about a great king

This book is extremely well written and interesting to read. Ms. Foot covers all the basics of Aethelstan's reign and goes over even unconventional sources to give us a portrait of this remarkable man and his time as the first true king of Britain. I must confess I barely knew of Aethelstan before reading this book but had read histories of Alfred's, his grandfather, reign. I must say that the book had all the elements I wish for in a book of history, it was informative, thorough, surprising and well written.

The chapters on Aethelstan's family life, how he dealt with his sister and his sometimes close and some time combative relationship with his many half brothers. It is also wonderful that we get such an insightful look at the fall of the Mercia kingdom as a separate polity from Wessex and Northumbria and a really informative, at least for me, look at the relationship between the Wessex kingdom and the Welsh and Cornish.

With out the discovery of new sources of information I don't know how one could improve on this wonderful book. Now only will you learn about the life a truly remarkable and devout man but you will learn of how the British Isles became the land of the English and you will see before your eyes modern day Britain taking shape during the reign of a truly heroic Christian king.

Robert Reiner is Professor of Criminology at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He is co-editor, along with Mike Maguire and Rod Morgan, of The Oxford Handbook of Criminology.

Review of The Politics of the Police

Reiners work in The Politics of the Police seems to embrace a Weberian methodology yet is always leans a little more to the left. The analysis is useful from an insiders perspective because no one gets let off the hook, however Reiner is clear he is not on the side of the administrative elites or anyone else who thinks contemporary policing can be analysed from a priviledged middle class standpoint. Reiner does not excuse police deviance at any point in his work, however he does not pretend that corruption in its contemporary form is like sin and has been with us for always and he promote the concept that corruption is socially constructed. Many 'progressive thinkers'have become lazy and complacent in analysing the police and have constantly supported ruling class and conservative positions by evaluating 'ordinary police' from such a broad set of rules and regulations that no police can escape the spotlight other than the heirarchy. Although these same progressive thinkers reject the notion that tougher laws and regulations can reduce crime they seem to have no difficulty in promoting the same concept to deal with police deviance.
Reiner is not one of these type of progressive thinkers. Perhaps he could deal more with the issue of female police but he would have to be careful. Many of the feminisms reject the notion that men can can comment on any aspect of the womens movement even if it is police and if Reiner ventured down the path of the women police he would be hard pressed to ignore the role of the Femocrats.

Interesting but wordy and very male centered perspective

An interesting look at the politics that influence policing both current and historical. However, this is written from a very male point of view so don't expect much in the way of a gendered analysis of policing or focus on female officers. Some interesting content nonetheless, but be aware of it's limitations.
