Excellent Guide to Cassandra

I've read a couple of books on Cassandra, and this book is by the far the best I have read. Throughout the book it is clear the authors have a deep knowledge of Cassandra both from a developer and operator's perspective. They provide not only a thorough guide to Cassandra internals, including references to the Java classes which implement certain features, but also cover how to deploy Cassandra, design your table schemas, and integrate Cassandra with other tools, particularly Apache Spark. I had a fair amount of experience with Cassandra before reading this book, yet I still learned new details which I was unaware of and came to understand better features and functionality with which I was already familiar. Furthermore, the author's process for designing your schemas is the best I have ever come across, and I will certainly refer back to this book in the future when I have to design new tables. Ultimately, I highly recommend this book both for those who are completely new to Cassandra as well as others who are more experienced with Cassandra but want to expand or solidify their current knowledge of Cassandra.

Very good, could still be better.

First and foremost, this is an excellent book on Cassandra. At this point, it has 100% five-star reviews, and I'm happy to add another one. If you're working with Cassandra (or thinking about it, etc.) you need this book.

With that out of the way, let me focus on a couple of the gaps and weaknesses in the Second Edition, with the hope that perhaps I can provoke Jeff and Eben into coming up with an even better Third Edition.
First, Cassandra is going to be just one element of a distributed system. As such, it needs to be manageable as part of the whole system, rather than in isolation. So let's include approaches such as Yelp's, or the use of tools like Nagios and Grafana. (Search for "Monitoring Cassandra at Scale", for example.)
Second, the authors are too quick to dismiss container technologies like Docker. Automated, containerized deployment is inevitable, and we need to understand how Cassandra deployments are going to work with Kubernetes, CloudFoundry, and OpenShift.
Third, the coverage of Cassandra in the cloud is a bit perfunctory. Mapping a large scale Cassandra topology onto VPCs, AZs, and geographical regions is non-trivial, especially when it comes to network design.
Fourth, I'd like to see more scorpions: more "Warnings and Caution" sidebars. I'd particularly like them to be a bit more opinionated on topics like repair policy, sizing, and which metrics to pay attention to. The Netflix and Yelp teams have published quite a bit of good material.

Overall, a very good book - but it could still be better!

Disappointing

It's one of those books that gets you ready for some mind-blowing information for half of the book, then offers information that you can't really use right now, because you've not yet amassed wealth to shelter in the first place. I hate filler books, and this was puffed full of unnecessary words. It's almost like someone telling you "I have a secret! Are you ready to hear it?!" You say yes and they say: "Get ready, it's the best secret ever!" and you say "Good, tell me!" Then they go, "This secret will change your life!" and after this exchange goes on for 10+ turns, you eventually give up and walk away, because clearly this person is trying to sell you air in the mountains.

Some great concepts, but perhaps pushing the boundaries a bit

Light bulb moment: Wheelwright's stress on the concept that the bulk of the tax code is there to provide incentives for doing one thing or another, and that you can be a lot wealthier by choosing to actively participate in ways the tax system rewards. I really hadn't thought about it in that particular way, but he's spot on. His corollary -- finding a tax accountant who can prospectively guide you into thinking through ideas in this tax-efficient way is also a really good one. I've spent a lot of time learning about my taxes, but this new vantage point has given me a lot of really good ideas that I'll be working on over the next few years, and that will certainly influence some restructuring of my business. (The concept of having one type of entity -- like an S corp -- being a member of another -- like an LLC -- in order to put activities and expenditures in the most helpful place was really illuminating.)

However, the continued statements that anything can be deducted if you just handle it the right way are disingenuous, and some people may try to stretch and get into completely indefensible situations based on his broad and often repeated statement. Everything is not potentially deductible. It is also a very padded book, with the author stretching to increase the word count to make it "book length".

Still it is a helpful book if the ideas are taken with a grain of salt, and it has really helped me think about taxes in a different way.

The Good, The Bad, and The ehh...

For what it's worth, the book is a good value for the money and here I'll attempt to present my honest overview of what it is, what you can expect, and what not to expect.

The book is written in plain English and attempts to explain in a straightforward way how taxes work and how as an investor you can benefit from the tax code, and what to be careful with. He does this by giving a few examples along the way that illustrate his point. To that I will add that some of his advice is overly vague filled with very general rules that the average person may find themselves scratching their heads, thinking, would that even apply to me, or, what the ____? I say this because the tax code is 10s of thousand of pages long and there is no way that a non technical book with about 250 pages is going to even scratch the surface of the behemoth that we have all come to love and embrace.

What you should not expect from this book is a silver bullet that starting next year you tax liability is going to drop by 50%. You can think of it as something like a financial crystal ball that gives you a handful of clues with little glimpses into the future but never giving you a solid answer. With the exception of a few things like cost segregation and accelerated methods of depreciation the rest of the strategies are going to require homework, research, and the help of a good accountant who is willing to work with you for a reasonable price and be knowledgeable in your industry. Remember, not all accountants are created equal and most of the states with the exception of a few have multiple levels of taxation that are not bound by federal law.

Overall the price to value ratio is pretty good regardless of your income tax IQ, even if you get nothing new of value it's an entertaining read. The shortcoming is actually part of it's strength, ease of use. But, by making the book simple, they also sacrificed substance and made a good portion of it vague with for example, he writes I believe 5 short paragraphs amounting to about 1 page on agricultural tax credits. Preceded by 1 paragraph dealing with mining and another about renewable energy which basically tell you nothing.

Dr. Amacher has received special recognition and numerous awards for his work from many companies and governement agencies, such as: The White House, United States Postal Service, Office of Secretary of Defense, United States Army and Air Force, Aerospace Industries Association, Lockheed Martin, Black and Decker, Rockwell International, Colorado Conference of Quality, Mark Industries, and many other. Dr. Amacher served as adjunct faculty member to Texas A&M University in their Executive Program, teaching Logistics & Quality Managment. He is recognized both in Who's Who Worldwide in Business Leaders and in Who's Who in Quality and is a frequent guest speaker and presenter. Dr. William "Buzz" Kennedy is a managing partner at Innovation Processes and Solutions (IPS) Consulting, LLC. Among several key responsibilities at IPS, he oversees strategic alliance across a host of industries in the international business community. An award-winning and recognized organizational leader with over 30 years experience in the publkc and private sector, Dr. Kennedy is a highly decorated combat veteran (U.S. Air Force) with over 20 years of international experience across the Far East, Middle East, and Europe. This book is a great resource for any student or practitioner seeking a better understanding of the complexity of health and illness.

Dr Kate Hamilton- West discusses the relationship between the psychological and biological factors of health and illness in a way which is both engaging and practical. The book goes beyond the common examination of symptom and remedy and presents a much more in depth and relevant approach to patient focused therapy.

This book has made a real difference to my professional approach in patient care. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who is considering a career in the health care industry.

Great content, terrible presentation

I love the Unicom books for JLPT study. They are pithy and well-organized. I actually bought the paper version of this and somehow ordered the Kindle version by accident. The content is most excellent, but the formatting is absolutely ghastly. I LOVE Allie's recipes!

I have been reading Allie's blog The Sprouting Seed (http://thesproutingseed.com) for awhile and LOVE all of the recipes that Allie posts. Several have become staples that I make weekly. As a new mom with a baby on the way I certainly need easy nourishing meals and always feel Crockpot meals make dinner less work, time, and energy. Plus they provide LOTS of leftovers to last us through the week. I really can't wait to put this cookbook to good use and try all of these great looking recipes!

I also enjoyed Allison's blog and was so excited to learn she was publishing an ebook. As a busy, working mom, a slow cooker saves-the-day for me on many a weeknight. The fact that the recipes are made of wholesome, healthy ingredients is even more appealing. I can't wait to try out some of the recipes over the holidays.

The play’s premiere by the Center Theatre Group at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles won seven 2013 Ovation Awards, including Playwriting. Her other plays include Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom and Breadcrumbs. Her work has been developed at the Sundance Theatre Lab, The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center’s National Playwrights Conference, and Lark Play Development Center. She is a member of New Dramatists.

Like a Nesting Doll, A Morality Play with Many Layers.

This is a short play. About 75-80 minutes run time, and maybe an hour to read the play in book form.
The plot is well known so I will just make some observations. The main theme is similar to other plots that precede it, specifically the "thought police" of Orwell's 1984.

The question being, in a virtual world, does one's actions become "real" in the sense that the avatars are perceived as real?

Haley explores this moral dilemma using 2 provoking criteria, the murder and molesting of a prepubescent child who is only a computer generated being in the realm of the "Hideaway," a CG constructed being in the "Nether" or internet. The Hideaway is a virtual world set in Victorian or turn of the last century era.

Using the most vile and universally detested immoral acts, that being child sexual abuse, Haley tries to convey that a simple knee jerk reaction is not always the true answer.

There are 5 principle characters in the play, but in the end (giveaway) there really is only 3)

Sims, the creator of the Hideaway and it's God,

Iris, the prepubescent child prostitute,

Morris the police interrogator,

Doyle, a constant visitor to the Hideaway and a college prof. with a family, and

Woodnut, another visitor to the Hideaway.

But just as virtual reality is not what it seems, no matter how real it feels (and it's creator, tells us it IS about feelings not acts) you will find out later that the characters themselves are not who they portray themselves to be.

At first the dilemma Haley presents, does morality and punishment extend to our imaginations if indistinguishable from true reality, and can it be prosecuted as a crime?

This is all fine and dandy when the opposing sides have a clear (or almost) clear view of the circumstances, whether it is wrong and punishable to do anything that one wants to do if it is only the Hideaway and not the "in world"?

BUT...as the play ends, we are given a "twist", and one that is not only more thought provoking, but one that literally turns what we think about the events at hand on its heals!

As the play goes along, we have Sims who creates the Hideaway as a place where one can act out any fantasy no matter how immoral, because it isn't "real"

Morris, the interrogator has the position (I believe) that if one thinks that it is real, and technology makes it so (think holodeck on the Enterprise) and what one does even in cyberspace, is wrong and can punished for it.

I cannot help but think of our present day moral questions about real child pornography verses simulated, child porn that isn't real such as Japanese "Lolicon" or cartoons depicting sexualized children which IS illegal in many places, even though just drawings.

But we must remember that Haley is not using Iris the child prostitute as a gimmick. She explores the darkest recesses of humanity in the terms of a virtual abused child. Oddly, Iris herself is not at all unhappy. She is not, in her own mind abused in any way.

The twist ending somewhat clarifies that, but provides more food for thought as well.

It turns out that Sims is the only true character, and it is his libertarian philosophy that drives the Hideaway.

Woodnut is in reality, the avatar of Inspector Morrris, who is trying to get evidence of "crimes" being committed against Iris, only to himself succumb to her child-like precocious charms.

The big surprise of course is Doyle...for he is actually Iris herself. Since you can be whoever you want to be in the Hideaway realm, Doyle chooses to be a seductive little girl.

This now explains why there were many Irises, and why they were ":banned" to boarding school in the Nether.

Sims knew that Iris was mostly men who chose to become a child, and even experience death and sex. Though not said in the play, I wonder if every time Iris is "killed" and resurrects, if she becomes just another vessel or avatar for the next "Doyle"?

One of the rules of the Nether is that one cannot fall in love or let Iris become emotionally attached. Sims tries to prevent his own falling in love with Iris precisely because he knows Iris is really not a child, but an adult male (in most cases) and "sends" her off to boarding school, where another Iris or child avatar with a clean emotional slate takes her place.

The undercurrent of homosexuality is now in question which further distorts the narrative as we have been led to believe.

And lets not forget the flip side. Morris is a woman police interrogator in the "in world", but her avatar is that of a man (Woodnut) a man who is seduced by a little girl who is really a man, and Woodcut is actually a woman!

So..is it an adult male who is "seduced" by a child prostitute, or is it an adult woman who is seduced by an adult male?

Haley seems to enjoy complicating the issues so that there are no easy answers.

Finally,

Sims, with his punishment of being banned forever from the Nether and his Hideaway, finally confronts his "love" for Iris which he could never bring himself to accept before...but was it love for a little girl, or another male adult? Haley does not elaborate.

Finally, when confronted with whether it is child abuse to "molest" a computer generated little girl, we now have to consider what if the little girl was not a little girl at all, but a computer generated child body inhabited by a grown man's mind?

Is the "computer being still a child when it is in reality a grown man? Is it the attraction by an adult to a child's body that we detest so much, or is it the fact of the child's mind being exposed to the abuse?

Consider in reality the moral quandary of a condition like Tanner's Syndrome, where an person does not go through puberty, but develops normally mentally, compared to a person who is an adult in body but has the mind of a child?

The law states that chronological age is the only factor that has legal standing assuming the person of "child-mind" does not fall into the threshold of gross mental deficiency.

So, is a man attracted to prepubescence evil if he has relations with a child's body but with an adult mind, or is he equally immoral to have relations with an adult body who has the mind of a child?

The Nether does not give us answers, only more questions. Technology will always pose a conundrum for legal scholars, and society when it tries to create moral boundaries.

This is the crux of the book, and as a instrument of producing thought provoking dilemmas to the complexities of the "real" world, as well as the ones we create...it does its job well.

Great Play....AWFUL Kindle Transfer

Sorry, a review also has to refer to the packaging and in this case a terrific play is ruined by an awful Kindle transfer...a lot of missing dialogue, for example:

SIMS:

That's it, the character's name, but no dialogue, no stage directions indicating silence...if it isn't the transfer then it's a horrible transcription of the play.
