Me podr�a haber ahorrado el cobro de este libro. Pero vi la entre entrevista de la escritora y promet�a algo mejor. Se fusil� algunos libros de motivaci�n ( no muy bien por lo visto ) y al faltarle informaci�n relleno el faltante con montones de hojas en blanco, podr�a haber sugerido que nos compraramos un cuaderno de menos de un dollar y el resultado habr�a sido mejor. De veras me siento estafada

About the Author
Joseph Porter earned a masters degree in Special Education as well as credentials in general education. He is currently a special education teacher at an inner-city elementary school in Los Angeles, where he teaches children with autism exclusively.

A good concept

The teaching methodology is one I want to re-inforce in my room - however, the stories and material are written at a lower age level than I was looking for. I teach readers at the 1st-4th grade ability but are 6th-11th grade and they really struggle with comprehension. I would recommend this book for those teaching 1st-3rd grade.

I just opened and had a glance. Amazed to see the amount of wholesome effort that has gone in.

A must have for Special Ed teachers!!

As a teacher who works exclusively with Autistic children, I know first hand how difficult it is to get your hands on easy, user-friendly, teacher-friendly material for the classroom. This book is like a dream come true. Instead of having to page through reams of material it just gets straight to the lesson, tells me exactly what to do, and supplies me with all the materials. I've already been to school, I've got my credential, and I don't have a lot of extra time to swim through long-winded explanations. Just give me the classroom-tested lesson that works, and I'll try it myself. And guess what? It's awesome. This teacher understands exactly how the Autism classroom works, having served on the "front lines" himself. This is not coming from administrators or researchers in a lab - this is coming from a teacher who is on your side. And on the side of your kids. This is a rare and beautiful thing. I wish there was more material out there just like this for us special ed teachers! Thank you. And I don't know what this other reviewer is talking about with the "mistakes." There's a couple of minor printing errors in the book that are fixed on the CD. You have to print out the worksheets from the CD anyway if you want your students to actually do the work and benefit from the curriculum. Anyway, this is a fantastic book. I hope there's more material like this coming soon. I've been using it since the beginning of the year and I'm already seeing improvements in my students' comprehension and, as a result, in their communication skills. I've even noticed a sharp decrease in echolalia amongst several students. Amazing!

About the Author
Tom Perkins co-founded the leading venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers in 1972. Exceptional But Also Uneven

The good parts are great. But there are also slow parts. First of all, this is not a biography although it is a shortened version biography. The first two chapters cover controversial periods of his life where he wants to get his side of the story heard, most notably the HP board spying controversy overwhich he resigned. Once he gets this off his chest there are some exceptional short stories, particularly his career at HP of which I had no idea. Obviously this experience is how he became the wealthy venture capitalist through the invaluable experience in the growth of HP and his close access to Packard and Hewlett as well as the many other Valley stars who were there at the time.

Where this book loses its way or becomes less interesting is when the author branches in to subjects that are diverse and of interest to him but maybe not the reader. For example, his sojurn into writing a cheesy novel which I previously read may not be of interest. Or, a reprinted interview about his short-term second wife, novelist Danielle Steele may not be of interest. Particularly when he insinuates that the interview cannot be believed. One thing is for sure, if you have no interest in sailing, this boat is definitely not for you as that is his passion including a complete chapter on a favorite novelist specializing in Clipper ships who he befriends. This is about 1/3 of the book.

All these sections have their own interest but I cannot overstate the value of his business discussions about HP and subsequently starting the famous venture capital firm which made him incredibly wealthy. this covers about 33% of the book.

There is one part of the book that is not covered sufficiently, the story of his wife of over thirty years who dies of cancer. Yes, it's covered briefly and their story is an incredible love story. But for the most passionate part of his life you would expect more. I would also mention there is a stunning picture confirming her beauty. On another note, there is virtually no mention of his children which I found surprising.

In summary, I do strongly recommend this book as Perkins' business contribution is significant to our national economy as he demonstrates here. Also, it is a very short read easily handled in a long day of plane travel.

great read! amazing story!

So I read Mines Bigger by David Kaplan and was interested to read more about Mr Perkins, so I found Valley Boy and read it. I am truly interested in Tom's story and business touch. Its been inspirational reading for me and I felt a connection with the boating and yachting stories as I share the same hobbies and interests like cars, etc. I highly recommend the book to anyone! Also go online and google (a KP start) either Tom Perkins or his yacht the Maltesse Falcon. There are a couple great videos out there on you tube, etc. to help sum anything up. If you still read the amazon reviews as you said in an interview, Thanks Tom! Great Book and Great Story! But why did you sell the Falcon?

Fantastic read about a fascinating man's life..

I never read these kinds of books; I could care less how Steve Jobs got there, or any of the others, but this book caught my interest and it was one of those rare books that I couldn't tear myself away from! A witty and charming insight into what must be a truly exceptional man, not just for his wealth, but for the rich and satisfying life he leads..

I went on to read the book about the boat, because the chapter here about it was rather brief. The info in "Mine' Bigger" was interesting and fleshed out the process of the Falcon's conception and creation, but the writer took a rather sarcastic tone throughout, almost vengeful, as though he was envious of Perkins' good fortune..

Get Valley Boy.. it's a charmer.. and although I never read 'trashy' books, I'm tempted on the strength of this one to get his Sex and the Single Zillionaire' just for fun.

Sobering tale of what it's like to live with depression

I have to admit I didn't know much, ok anything, about Sally Brampton, before picking up this book. Brampton was a successful writer, columnist and founding editor of (British) "Elle" magazine. Then her world fell apart.

In "Shoot the Damn Dog" (326 pages), the author brings her harrowing tale of descending into a full-blown depression, and the harrowing and life-changing consequences it had on her, and it has on many people. In the early part of the book, Brampton retells how she managed to be so successful. As Brampton makes clear, her depression came about by not just one singular event, but by many. She was let go as the editor of "Red" magazine, a devastating event, that was then compounded by other events, including a failed marriage and the death of a close event. On the termination of het stint at "Red", the author observes "So the failure of my editorship at "Red" was not simply the failure of a job. It was the destruction of an absolute truth about myself". The author's tales of her numerous visits and stays into various hospitals are equally devastating. At one point she observes "I thought that if I went into hospital, I would become well. I thought a pill could make me better. The failure of both to do either was almost more catastrophic for me than the illness itself". Wow.

This book is not for the faint of heart, although having emerged from her long bout, the author shares with us that "It;s two years since I emerged from depression and I no longer want myself dead. I want myself alive. I am no longer my own enemy." That's about as 'uplifting' as this book gets, but then again this book is not so much about uplifting as it is about making us understand that depression is an illness, a very serious one, yet one from which one can emerge victoriously, albeit one day at the time.

A must read, whether you are up or down

I have never been formally diagnosed with depression, yet like most people I guess, I have had spells of 'the blues' and feelings of melancholia at times. I have however a mother who has suffered from manic depression all her life and my second wife has been in the same boat for the past five years.

Sally Brampton's book is high on my recommended list. Written with honesty, clarity and humor, it certainly gives a most important insight in to what it must be like to be seriously depressed.

There are many books on depression out there. This one gets is.

Shoot the Damn Dog is so on target. I suffer from depression as do many in my family. I read it in one sitting after taking in out of the library. Found the book on Amazon & purchased 2 of them. one to keep & the other I gave it to my sister to read.
She recently passed but I hope she gave it to her daughter & son to read.

Well written

A well written story, not overly described scenery but very well described scenes and amazingly described characters.I really enjoyed this story, but it leaves a lot of questions. The reader is left in no doubt that this is the first in a series.

This book is what 50 Shades wants to be if it ever grows up. 2 stubborn people meet and the adventure begins! Pleasure, pain, joy, hope, and love... Things we all have, need, or want in our lives. I can't wait to read more from this author!

I loved this story

I loved this story! Xavier Brice has been tasked with taking Io away. Of course, Io believes that she is just being taken away to the next place where she will be abused. She speaks bluntly and harshly to protect herself. She has been abused all her life and she believes that no one wants her. Brice punishes her severely when she doesn’t do as she is told. But, she is trying to protect herself from being emotionally harmed. There are many instances of Brice and Io not understanding one another. Unfortunately, it seems Io gets punished every time. Eventually, Brice gets orders to marry Io. He doesn’t know why, but he has come to care for her. The punishments in this story are pretty severe. Io gets punished again and again until she obeys or at least appears to obey. I look forward to the next book in this series. I want to know more about Io’s background. I want to know what her heritage is. I want to know who has injured her and why. I have so many questions that I want answered. I give this book 5 stars!

Absolutely ridiculous but terribly fun book

This is the final (?) book in the "Kama Kahani" line from Random House, India. The other four books were sometimes silly, but this one beats its predecessors hands down in the ridiculous stakes. That said, I loved it anyway. "The Thief of Poompuhar" is a fun, anachronistic, and over the top novel with women warriors (historically correct, by the way), evil villains, a majestic hero in disguise that all behave just like modern people would even though the book is a historical.
