This book worked for me

I thought I'd be the first to give a review. I liked the book a lot. It was short and to the point here are some highlights.
- The book isn't a full content review of everything that you are supposed to know for the Math 2 exam. As the author correctly notes, you should study from a precalculus textbook because the exam is basically your precalc class.
- The book only covers topics that will RAISE YOUR SCORE.
- The main part of that is the 25 question types (which I actually saw on the real Math 2 exam so I can say this part is legit).
- There are also test taking and study hints, nothing groundbreaking here but still helpful

Overall, I would say this book is definitely worth the $5 for kindle because my score jumped 40 points from the practice tests (760 avg) and I got an 800 on the exam. Can't really ask for much more than that.

A very worthy sequel

The Reckoners Trilogy is one which I was initially skeptical of. Despite being recommended to me by literally dozens of fans, I didn't know if it would be my cup of tea. I'm a fairly big fan of the idea that superhuman powers would be a net-positive to the world and tend to be on the idealistic end of things despite being a fan of edgy antiheroes. The Reckoners Trilogy is based around the concept of a world which has been devastated by evil superhumans, so it's one which you'd think was fairly cynical, right?

The first novel, Steelheart, was anything but. Despite the fact it is in a post-apocalypse world where the only remains of human civilization are all controlled by tyrants, I found it to be surprisingly light-hearted and hopeful. The fact it was about a plucky resistance (the Reckoners) against an evil overlord made it closer to Star Wars than Watchmen. I also found out its depiction of superhumans was a lot more nuanced than I initially suspected. The fact the book was genuinely fun helped it as well, so much so that I picked up the second novel as soon as I finished the first.

Firefight picks up not long after the events of Steelheart with the Reckoners having eliminated the city's former overlord as well as re-established human-run civilization. Unfortunately, they can't capitalize on the momentum because they're under siege by a near-endless number of Epics seeking to claim Steelheart's former territory as well as make a name for themselves by eliminating his killers. Things get worse when they attempt to target the city of New York, only to find themselves in over their heads against a water-bending mastermind and a religious-obsessed exploding demigod.

I've got to say I really enjoyed this book all round. It does what a sequel should in that it doesn't repeat what the original book did, expands on the concepts of the first book, allows for character growth, and shows us new material in the same world. Particularly interesting is the expansion of the Professor's background as well as details about the early days of the Calamity.

Brandon Sanderson is an amazing world-builder who certainly details elements of his world which would have eluded other writers. Indeed, it is his greatest strength that he can create unique and memorable locations which are internally consistent. The water city replacing New York is different in culture, environment, and atmosphere to Newcago. I liked the idea the people are more or less resigned to the Epics in New York and generally spend all of their lives partying because their masters keep them fed out of hand.

The villains of Regalia and Obliteration are excellent foils with a lot more development than the late Steelheart. Regalia is a woman with plans within plans and a twisted code of honor that bends around the psychosis afflicting Epics. Obliteration, by contrast, is completely insane but his beliefs are entirely consistent with the deranged world which have sprung up around humanity. They're wonderful comic book-style villains and watching our heroes play off them is excellent.

We also finally get an explanation for how and why Epics are given their powers as well as how their minds are shattered beyond recovery. I'm not entirely satisfied with this explanation but think it works for the story which Brandon Sanderson is trying to tell. Certainly, it provides a lot of dramatic energy which the story exploits from beginning to end. It also results in a massive twist at the end which made me buy the third novel in the series immediately.

The only thing I didn't like about the novel was the romance between Megan and David. Unfortunately, this takes up quite a bit of the novel. David is deeply in love with the treacherous and evil Epic as well as convinced she is secretly good. This is, apparently, purely because he thinks she's hot. Unfortunately, the narrative bears out David's suspicions and it becomes a tedious display of why the power of love wins out over all.

The action scenes in the book are incredible with truly epic fights that are described well. Brandon Sanderson has a movie director's ability to stage them in his text and an unlimited budget to see them on display. He also manages to invoke tension for all of our heroes because we never know who will die or be taken out of play by the events within. That's a rare gift and one which raises the stakes in the book considerably.

In conclusion, Firefight is a really good novel weighed down by what TV tropes calls a "Romantic Plot Tumor." Even so, I'm going to say it's an excellent action adventure novel throughout. It strikes the right sort of balance between fantasy, science fiction, and reality in order to feel like a good comic book. I also cared about the characters enough that I wanted the story to continue. Which is a pretty good endorsement all round.

A different caste than the first novel, but a blast of a time ... !

I wasn't sure what to think of the concept of "The Reckoners" series to begin with, honestly. Then again my brain said, "Nikki, it's Brandon Sanderson, get real." So I finally gave in to Steelheart, the book prior to this novel. I'm so very glad I did. Firefight wasn't as grimy, or gritty, or didn't have that down home -- hit the streets and strangle the big bad oppressive epic who killed your dad and ruined your life feel to it.

However, don't let that stop you. Like Mr. Sanderson always does, he rocks your world entirely, and he does it with that cool calm logic that frustrates and excites you down to your very core. His books never cease to amaze me, he can add a fractal of information in a corner of your mind somewhere and so just when you're feeling a little "mehhh" you turn a few pages and it plows over you so hard you'll wish you had a few enteric aspirin on hand! The last third of Firefight had this effect on me. It's a definite read just for the imagery, the pictures he paints in your head of the city they travel to. I could spend days there in my head. I won't bore you with my review, I was impressed though, yet again, but I suppose from me, that's no surprise.

I freaking love this series

I just had a lot of fun reading this book, despite the fact I stayed up too late reading it and now Brandon Sanderson will have earned his kickback from the caffeine companies. I really love the characters and REALLY need to see what happens. You can bet David's encounter with Calamity is not as simple as it seemed! I'll be finishing the series today, probably.

Likes: Tons of action, interesting twists, some cool character development. Really it's not the deepest book out there, but like I said, I just had a lot of fun reading it. I loved Dawnslight and the thing with the fortune cookies, I hope it's not the last we see of that character. I also thought there were some pretty hilarious parts with David's inept metaphors and general awkwardness.

Dislikes: I wish there was WAY more of Firefight (it's the title for heaven's sake) and WAY more of Prof. He's such a great character

Great Guide -- Awesome Pictures!

I purchased this e-book a couple days after it came out, and just recently got back from my trip. Anton Swanepoel, thank you so much I already sent you an email personally thanking you for putting together such a wonderful package, but I wanted to personally leave you a public review as well. People obviously this isn't for everyone, but if you found your way to e-books about Cambodian temples. Well it probably is, we planned our entire trip based around the places in this book.
My husband and I are both archeologists so naturally we wanted to see as many places as we could at once. We were able to plan an effective route to hit all 20 temples on our 2-week trip because of you, we had the experience of a lifetime. It also probably has nothing to do with your e-book, but I was purposed to on my trip at the temple of Angkor Wat. Gosh if that wasn't the most romantic thing my hubby could have done!
The temples were all magnificent and we were able to find cheap local guides at each one! This was truly a life changing journey and while I can't say your experience will be exactly as mine will, but as far as what the book provides it's absolutely spot on. We only really had to do research about getting to Cambodia and between the sites, aside from that everything else we needed was covered in a neat and organized fashion. I highly recommend this book as a quick read and a great source to plan a trip from. We also noticed that you have another book about Phnom Penh, we're going to purchase that and plan our next trip around it! Keep making these we love ‘em!

This Travel book is very well written, insightful and absolutely amazing for me to know all the captivating and mysterious temples in Cambodia. I was always fascinated about cambodia and planning to visit some temples and sightseeing in cambodia but I did not have any concise information until this guide book. And I’ve come to know that Angkor Wat temple is more than 1000 years old and there are over 50 other temples to know more about . About the Author

Karen P. DePauw, PhD, is vice provost for graduate studies and dean of the graduate school at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. She has been involved with disability sport since 1981 and was on the original USOC Committee on Sports for the Disabled, on which she served for 12 years. She also served on the USOC Task Force on Disability and was a member of the Organizing Committee for the 1996 Paralympic Congress in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. DePauw has served as president of the International Federation on Adapted Physical Activity (IFAPA). She is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD); American College of Sports Medicine; National Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (NAPEHE); National Consortium on Physical Education and Recreation for Handicapped (NCPERH); and North American Federation for Adapted Physical Activity. She also serves on the editorial board of Adapted Physical Activity Quarterly. Dr. DePauw enjoys playing golf, cycling, and traveling in her spare time.

Susan J. Gavron, PED, is associate professor emeritus at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She has had a lifelong involvement with people and disabilities in a variety of program formats, including teaching, camping, and sport.
Dr. Gavron has been involved in research of elite athletes with disabilities at the national and international levels. She participated in the research advisory group for the USOC Committee on Sports for the Disabled. She also has extensive programming experience in physical education and leisure for individuals with disabilities. She has received numerous awards for her work and service to the state of Ohio. Recently retired, Dr. Gavron is a firefighter and first responder and enjoys photography, fishing, and reading in her leisure time.

Should be mandatory reading for expat employers!

I already knew a fair bit about investing before I read this book. And while Andrew Hallam confirmed much of what I did know, I learned plenty more as well. This book should be mandatory reading for expat employers. And they should give copies to their employees. Hallam offers a variety of clearly written investment strategies, laced with a bit of humor for an enjoyable read.

When I first moved overseas, nobody suggested how much money I should be saving. Nobody told me I wouldn't be building Social Security credits. Nobody told my friends either. Some of them retired with very little because they didn't have a plan. This book presents the framework for a plan that every expat should be exposed to, and it tackles that question about how much money you should save.

Secure your future: A Financial Education Must Read

If you're an international teacher--or any teacher--this book is a MUST read. We are fodder for the investment hyenas (I fell into the added fee abyss that is Eagle Star myself) and schools, while trying to be helpful are often pretty clueless themselves about the ins-and-outs of financial small print. Moreover, as ex-pat teachers, we don't have the state-funded retirement programs to fall back on, and must plan for retirement ourselves. At the ripe old age of 55, after 12 years of international teaching and not much savings to show for it, I realized I was in serious trouble and had nightmares about living in boxes and eating catfood. Fortunately, a friend told me about Hallam's first book, Millionaire Teacher. Reading it gave me the focus and information I needed to work with TIAA-Cref (another low fee investment company) to build a balanced portfolio.

It also saved me from signing up with my new school's recommend investment company, Alexander Beard. You will learn all about them in this new book of Hallam's. Sadly, they are far from the worst offender. And in this book, Hallam takes the hyenas on directly, revealing the empty promise of their claims to "low fee" investing. Meticulously researched and documented, with myriad examples of the shoddy and devious business practices these companies use to prey on the unwary, Hallam's newest book will arm you with the knowledge of stocks, bonds, off-shore accounts, the perils of actively-managed mutual funds and more. He explains it all in a witty, understandable way, then provides readers with a no-nonsense approach to investment planning, providing plenty of recommended resources.

There are bound to be howls of outrage from the investors and their shills in the Amazon reviews. Hallam has already put one company out of business in Singapore, merely by educating teachers to their legal but devious practices, and no doubt the other companies he "outs" in the book are ready and waiting to pounce. No wonder: They stand to lose millions as educators...well...educate themselves through books like Hallam's and shun their services.

Offshore pension providers like Zurich International must hate Hallam

Andrew Hallam's book is a must-read for expats (and for locals), especially if they are new to investing.

I have already written a review for this book on my blog, TheRapeOfHongKong (dot) com. Look for the post titled, "Bestselling Author Slams Insurance-Linked “Donkeys” and Commission-Hungry “Rip-Offers” in Latest Book on Investing".

Offshore pension providers like Zurich International must hate Hallam. It's rumored that Hallam's articles single-handedly destroyed Zurich's business in Singapore. If you have never been to Hallam's website, definitely check it out.

Hallam's haters, the "rip-offers", will no doubt be leaving negative reviews soon. Just ignore them.

Really Useful Book ..Get it If you have at least month to prepare for the GRE

If you have just 2 or 3 weeks, then you should skip vocab preparation and focus on other parts of GRE.

But, if you have a month or more, then this book will help.

It really helped me with vocab.

What I really liked is that the author give short sentence fragments that are memorable.

Rather than giving many meanings, the author works hard to give just one (or maximum 2 meanings) that are useful for the GRE test.

For example, here are some words and thier meanings. Please note that these are not the most common meanings of these words, but these are the meanings you need to know for the GRE test.

milk = extract
stole = long scarf
riddle = to make many holes in, permeate
root = to dig
kite = bad check
rifle = search through and steal
ejaculate = exclaim

I find the word list comprehensive and at the same time highly memorable because of "memorable sentence fragments" which save time as you memorize words.
I also used \an old tape recorder that played back and forth all night to record most of the words and actually studied in my sleep by turning up the volume little by little and dreaming about learning the words in class!

Very good content, Very good customer service.

I'm not native American, but I'm Korean.
So, I'm not familiar with many BASIC words for native English user.
(People whose mother language is not English may agree with this.)
There are book for ESSENTIAL 300 (or 500) GRE vocabularies, but it doesn't work for people not American.
Those people need to review whole words including BASIC words for GRE, not just a few ESSENTIAL words.
That's why this book is super awesome.
I've purchased several books and looked through them but no book has such many words like this book does.
As long as it doesn't include infinitely many words like dictionary, the more the book has words, the better it is.

I also need to mention customer service.
I'm using Kindle edition.
Kindle users may experience that content varies as you move through pages.
(Since Kindle use 'location' concept instead of robust 'page' concept to fit diverse devices.
So, you can possibly miss some vocabularies.
So, I asked them to number each words, (i.e., 365 accident, 366, acquire) and they immediately update numbering version.
I've never seen this good customer service.

If you're native or already so good with many vocabularies like TOEFL words, well, go with your own choice.
If you need to review or want to study as many words as possible,
I bet this book is the best choice for you !!!

BEST GRE VOCAB EVER!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This is the MOST EXTENSIVE GRE vocab list I have ever found and, trust me, I have searched a lot since my goal is a PHD program in English at a top-notch university. If you learn these words you will need no more than 5 minutes to complete the vocab questions on the GRE which leaves you with 25 min for the reading comprehension questions. And this is quite auspicious/propitious (check your GRE vocab!) for your verbal score. You need to study though! Do not think that skimming over these words once or twice will magically bestow brilliant vocab skills on you. Therefore, as others have pointed out, you need to give yourself at least a month to prepare.
Either way, if you do not have at least a month ahead of you, how high of a score are you actually expecting to get? When someone tells me they have just a few weeks to study, I already know they are not being serious enough about their grad school application. Such students are bound to get mediocre results and will eventually end up in a mediocre program, probably with little funding and lots of TA stints that will tremendously hinder their research, possibly procrastinate their grad studies, and protract their dissertation project. Yes, the repercussions of a mediocre GRE score can be deleterious (another one from the list!) to your overall grad school experience and professional performance in life!
So if you are up for mediocre preparation and mediocre results, better save yourself the money, go to the library, and get one of the standard GRE prep books with about 200 words. THIS BOOK IS FOR SERIOUS STUDENTS WITH SERIOUS INTENTIONS!!
What I MOST like about it is the MP3 files because you can listen to them any time any place. Just upload them to your I phone, I pad, or MP3 player and listen to them when you are walking to/from campus, going to/from work (even at work!), or just shopping, or working out at the gym! Every minute you listen to these words they get imbedded in your brain which is a much more effective way of memorizing than going over a list of words only when you are at home, at a desk, etc.
So do not hesitate! If you are serious about your GRE score, seriously invest in yourself by buying this book!
