About the Author
Bill Daniel is a filmmaker whose documentary on the history of hobo graffiti, Who Is Bozo Texino?, was screened at more than 350 venues worldwide. He has exhibited film, photography, and installation work in several museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the New Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. His work has received awards from Creative Capital, Film Arts Foundation, the Pioneer Fund, Texas Filmmaker Production Fund, the R and B Feder Charitable Foundation, and the Western States Media Alliance. He lives in Los Angeles, CA.

this is a treasure!

I bought this a number of years ago..and every-time i look through it i'm grateful i made this decision. It is full of wonderful photographs, and old clippings...a great bit of history for train nerds, or anyone at all interested in the history of the U.S., graffiti, or outsider art. it's all black and white...like most zine collections...but it has it's beauty!

For more than a decade following the end of World War II, Eric Newby toiled away in the British fashion industry, peddling some of the ugliest clothes on the planet. (Regarding one wafer-thin model in her runway best, he was reminded of "those flagpoles they put up in the Mall when the Queen comes home.") Fortunately, Newby reached the end his haute-couture tether in 1956. At that point, with the sort of sublime impulsiveness that's forbidden to fictional characters but endemic to real ones, he decided to visit a remote corner of Afghanistan, where no Englishman had planted his brogans for at least 50 years. What's more, he recorded his adventure in a classic narrative, A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush. The title, of course, is a fine example of Newby's habitual self-effacement, since his journey--which included a near-ascent of the 19,800-foot Mir Samir--was anything but short. And his book seems to furnish a missing link between the great Britannic wanderers of the Victorian era and such contemporary jungle nuts as Redmond O'Hanlon.

At times it also brings to mind Evelyn Waugh, who contributed the preface. Newby is a less acidulous writer, to be sure, and he has little interest in launching the sort of heat-seeking satiric missiles that were Waugh's specialty. Still, A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush is a hilarious read. The author excels at the dispiriting snapshot, capturing, say, the Afghan backwater of Fariman in two crisp sentences: "A whole gale of wind was blowing, tearing up the surface of the main street. Except for two policemen holding hands and a dog whose hind legs were paralysed it was deserted." His capsule history of Nuristan also gets in some sly digs at Britain's special relationship with the violence-prone Abdur Rahman: Officially his subsidy had just been increased from 12,000 to 16,000 lakhs of rupees. To the British he had fully justified their selection of him as Amir of Afghanistan and, apart from the few foibles remarked by Lord Curzon, like flaying people alive who displeased him, blowing them from the mouths of cannon, or standing them up to the neck in pools of water on the summits of high mountains and letting them freeze solid, he had done nothing to which exception could be taken. Newby also surpasses Waugh--and indeed, most other travel writers--in another important respect: he's miraculously free of solipsism. Even the keenest literary voyagers tend to be, in the purest sense of the term, self-centered. But A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush includes wonderfully oblique portraits of the author's travel companion, Hugh Carless, and his wife, Wanda (who plays a starring role in such subsequent chronicles as Slowly down the Ganges). There are also dozens of brilliant cameo parts, and an indelible record of a stunning landscape. The roof of the world is, in Newby's rendering, both an absolute heaven and a low-oxygen hell. Yet the author never pretends to pit himself against a malicious Nature--his mountains are, in Frost's memorable phrase, too lofty and original to rage. Which is yet another reason to call this little masterpiece a peak performance. --James Marcus

A short walk?!

A shocking book! Two Englishmen who've never climbed before set off to visit the mountains in Afghanistan. They drive across Europe (a challenge itself) and then arrive to face tribes who've never seen westerners, not to mention the unknown mountains. Evelyn Waugh wrote the preface, so that gives you an idea about this book, whose title is itself an understatement. Serious and funnyl!

A very funny and self-deprecating adventure classic about getting to and exploring a remote part of Afghanistan, and a failed attempt to climb Mt Samir. Before there was Bill Bryson, there was Eric Newby. Another excellent reason to recommend the book is its portrait of an Afghanistan that existed before so much international meddling (Soviet, Pakistani, Iranian, American) doomed Afghans to the current dismal state of affairs. You can read about that woeful place in Christina Lamb's excellent Farewell Kabul.

A superb blend of humor and adventure

I got this book on the recommendation from the book Afghanistan: A Companion and Guide, which described it as "among the best travel books ever written". Having read the book, I would have to agree.

This book could be a humor book almost as much as a travel book. Newby's style of writing is, at times, felt like watching a Monty Python sketch in its dry British humor and the unexpected places that one constantly found it coming up.

Eric Newby starts the book as a man working in the fashion industry after World War II, who realizes that he's in the wrong job. He calls up a friend who worked for the foreign service in Afghanistan and asks him if he wants to go to Nuristan in northeast Afghanistan. He quits he jobs, does four days of mountain climbing in Great Britian, and heads off.

I will not spoil the adventures he has just in getting there but will say that they are amazing, unexpected and fascinating. You really get the sense of a seat-of-your-pants road trip in the way that he almost blindly goes into what would be anyone's trip of a lifetime.

His description of Afghanistan and its people who he meets and who guide him is wonderful and accurate to everything I have seen in this country myself. To anyone who likes travel books or simply wants to read a fascinating adventure, you need to read this book.

Great book, very helpful

This book is a fine, understandable guide for anybody considering a stem cell treatment. It was written by a stem cell researcher at the University of California, but does not bog down in technical information. The goal of the author is to explain complex scientific issues in a way we can all understand. The author has faced a grave illness and knows firsthand the type of pressures that they can generate. He was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer at the age of 42, a very young age to come down with that affliction. Going through that experience was one of the important reasons he wrote this book - to help other persons like himself who are trying to come to grips with difficult medical and scientific matters. If you are one of those persons, I recommend the book highly. If you are just seeking more information about stem cell research, it has clear and forthright explanations about the field. Stem Cells 101

As a stem cell scientist and now editor, I've read a fair few non-fiction science books in my time. Most struggle with the task of presenting complicated data and theories to a general readership, and the resulting manuscript is usually dense, convoluted, and packed with jargon. By contrast, Stem Cells: An Insider's Guide is easily accessible and moreover is entertaining - a key ingredient for many readers.

The book is a whirlwind tour through the world of stem cells. It discusses not only the basic science, but more thorny issues like ethics, regulation, and the patient-doctor perspective. For a stem cell scientist, it is at times too simple. But that is deliberate, as any additional complexity would probably deter a wider audience. For the patient, this book can read like a self-help guide, and in many ways it is: questions will be answered, and the resources to find out more are provided. The book is largely US-centric, which is expected given the author's background.

In short, there's something in here for everyone. This book is best for those who want to find out more about stem cells: what they are, what they can do, what they can't do, how they are used currently and what promises they hold for the future.

Making the science accessible

It is very rare to find a scientist who can write eloquently about a very technical, complex, controversial subject and make it understandable and accessible to the general public. This book is exactly what it purports to be...an insider's guide to the galaxy of stem cells. Regenerative medicine and the future of personalized medicine are revolutionary topics even among the select group of scientists who DO understand the complex technicalities. Dr. Knoepfler does a masterful job of explaining what we should all have learned in high school science and are now reading about in the newspaper or hearing about on TV and radio. After you finish reading this book, please consider donating a copy to your local public library. I would encourage anyone who wants to support our future STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) students to get this book into school science curriculums and libraries. Should be required reading for all medical school students.

Glenn Hubbard policymaker, professor, and researcher.

R.Glenn Hubbard is the Dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics in the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and Professor of Economics in Columbia’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a director of Automatic Data Processing, Black Rock Closed-End Funds, Dex Media, Duke Realty, KKR Financial Corporation, and Ripplewood Holdings. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1983. From 2001—2003, he served as Chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers, and from 1991—1993, he was Deputy Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department. Glenn Hubbard’s fields of specialization are public economics, financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, macroeconomics, industrial organization, and public policy. He is the author of more than 90 articles in leading journals, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Quarterly Journal of Economics, RAND Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and numerous private foundations.

Anthony Patrick O’Brien is a professor of economics at Lehigh University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1987. He has taught principles of economics for more than 15 years, in both large sections and small honors classes. He received the Lehigh University Award for Distinguished Teaching. He was formerly the director of the Diamond Center for Economic Education and was named a Dana Foundation Faculty Fellow and Lehigh Class of 1961 Professor of Economics. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University. Anthony O’Brien’s research has dealt with such issues as the evolution of the U.S. automobile industry, the sources of U.S. economic competitiveness, the development of U.S. trade policy, the causes of the Great Depression, and the causes of black—white income differences. His research has been published in leading journals, including the American Economic Review, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Industrial Relations, and the Journal of Economic History. His research has been supported by grants from government agencies and private foundations. In addition to teaching and writing, Anthony O’Brien also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Socio-economics.

Purchased instead of 4th edition

There's not much difference in the chapters (just rearrangement of where the different chapter topics are) so if you get this one instead of the newest edition, just be sure to check (& double-check) that you're reading the right topics before your lectures.

Pretty straightforward book. Not too hard to read, surprisingly. If your class doesn't require some online access or code, I would highly recommend just getting this book. (Ignore what professors & publishers or whoever tell you, try not to get the newest edition unless completely in need of the content/accessories that comes with it bc they're just a waste of your money.)

Happy with this purchase! Less than $1 for my book, whoohoo!~

About the Author
Shi Cun Wu began his formal education in Traditional Chinese Medicine at Jilin Medical University in Jilin, China, where he graduated in the 1950s. His understanding of TCM began much earlier than this, however, under the tutelage of his father, who was himself a TCM physician. After graduation, Shi Cun Wu engaged in 20 years of TCM clinical practice and research in Chinese hospitals and herbal research bureaus. He authored articles on herbal research for the Journal of Chinese Herbal Medicine and presented his findings at academic conferences. He participated in the project to compile the 1977 edition of the People's Republic of China Pharmacopoeia, helping to define quality standards for the sections on Traditional Herbal Medicine and Herbal-Based Patent Medicine. In addition, he helped write the Guangdong Provincial Traditional Herbal Medicine Preparation Handbook as well as the Traditional Herbal Medicine section of the 1978 edition of the Guangdong Provincial Medicine Standards Manual. After this work, Shi Cun Wu emigrated to the United States, where he has operated an herbal store and taught classes on all aspects of TCM for two decades. He is an NCCA Diplomate in Herbology and Acupuncture.

I used this text to study for the NCCAOM Board Exam. I found the review of information most helpful, the study questions were a bit overwhelming. The content review pages were concise and to the point- just what I needed to get organized in mind after 3 years of so much information!

After taking (and passing) the exam, I would suggest just using the content review and not bothering too much with the review questions. TCM Questions and the NCCAOM review questions were more helpful than the ones in this book.

Intense story of revenge and second chances at love

My first book by this author was prior book THE PIRATE NEXT DOOR (which I very much enjoyed) where we first met brooding pirate hunter James Ardmore. James is a driven pirate hunter who has also angered the British Royal Navy by attacking their ships and setting free pressed American sailors. He is considered an outlaw in England and a hero in his native America (Charleston, SC to be specific) but he will not rest until he has killed pirate Black Jack Mallory, the man who killed James' brother and his family. While extricating an American spy from an English house party the previous year, he stumbled onto Lady Diana Worthing whose father knows Black Jack. James abducts her thinking she may know something of value about where Jack is but during their stormy two-day encounter he determines that 1.) She knows nothing about Black Jack, 2.) She's a spitfire who is not easily cowed and 3.) He's extremely attracted to her and senses the feeling is mutual (they share one steamy kiss!). After asking her to come away with him (she refuses) he lets her return to her husband and her life.
Unfortunately, Diana's life is miserable, trapped in a marriage to a man who detests her, thinks she cheats on him and who is ashamed of his own daughter who is deaf. She is also carrying guilt for her daughter Isabeau's hearing loss as a result of a childhood illness. If not for Isabeau, Diana may well have run away with James, but she could not leave her daughter behind to the mercy of an indifferent father. Now, a year later, she is a widow and living with her father on a private island off the English coast when she and Isabeau discover James Ardmore washed up on the beach!
James and Diana quickly discover that they are no less attracted to one another than they were last year, but neither is particularly happy about it. James is determined to have his revenge on Black Jack - even if it means Diana and her father are caught in the cross-fire - and Diana is just as determined to keep her father's secrets and her daughter safe. Their relationship is stormy and tumultuous with sparks both verbal and sexual igniting regularly. Diana is a woman who loved once when she was young and stupid who is now smarter and a little embittered at what life as thrown her way. James is emotionally dead inside since the death of his brother and his estrangement from his sister, Honoria. The only thing keeping him going is revenge. But when these two begin to fall for one another, it changes everything. Will James decide that love is sweeter than revenge? Will Diana find that the right man can restore her faith in love? I must say that this is one intense couple! No lighthearted romance for these two. But I enjoyed James' character very much - intense, introspective, self-contained but with a sardonic sense of humour - though he was a touch too proud and uncommunicative sometimes. Though I admired Diana's backbone and dedication to Isabeau, at times I found her a touch waspish, though given her experiences with her husband, I suppose allowances should be made.
If you read THE PIRATE NEXT DOOR, do not expect the same tone here. Whereas Grayson (from TPND) was easy-going and witty and the tone of that story relatively light, I found this story more serious and brooding (not exactly "yo ho ho" as another review states), reflecting both James and Diana's characters (though it's not without some humour). I enjoyed both stories and look forward to Honoria's coming in early 2005.

yo ho ho and a bottle of fun!

Jennifer Ashley is an amazing writer. This is her third romance, but she is also doing rather well writing Regency Era Detective Mysteries under the penname of Ashley Gardner. Her tales are always charming, very strong historically, and this her third pirate tale, demonstrates her love for yo yo ho and a bottle of rum. She does it with panache! So check out all three pirate tales, but don't hesitate to buy her Regency Mysteries as well. She is a very talented writer no matter which genre.
When James Ardmore washes up, barely alive, on a beach after the ship he was on goes down, he never expected HER to be staring at him, when he opened his eyes. HER - being Lady Diana. After all, he had kidnapped her and held her as a pawn in his plans for vengeance once before, so he does not expect a welcome, despite that passionate kiss they shared before.
James is on a mission to destroy the buccaneer Black Jack Mallory and will stop at nothing, use anyone to achieve that aim. He will risk his own life to see the deed done for Mallory killed James' family.
James abducted Diana, even though he knows it will ruin her socially, because her father has a connection to Black Jack. Only, a sexy Pirate Hunter does not cower Diana. She lives with a cold husband, a husband who abhors his only child, because she is deaf. So James does not rattle this gutsy lady. Despite making handling his captive more difficult, James admires Diana's strengths and her determination to escape, and Diana does everything to make James regret he kidnapped her. Only, Diana begins to see traits in the man, that he cares - which is a lot more than the cold fish she has for a husband does - so she begins to fall in love with the Pirate Hunter, even knowing the romance is doomed, especially since James cannot let go of the need for vengeance.
Now, James has washed up on the beach of her isolated home, giving Diana another chance at teaching the man she loves to open his heart once more.
Jennifer is a strong writer, with a deft voice. She is a wizard in creating interesting characters that make you care about them. In this one, the child with her hearing problem and how Diana helps her over come that, is so wonderfully done, with such heart.
Here's to hoping Jennifer Ashley/Ashley Gardner, keeps giving us such rich Regency tales. Her love for writing is in every word.

sensual and intriguing pirate tale....

this is my first Jennifer Ashley. I'm usually disappointed with most pirate romances-most being heavy on sex scenes but not much story. I'm happy to say this book was HIGHLY sensual but had a great storyline as well.

Those who like their romances with adventuresome women, alpha males, and a hero/heroine who are older (no blushing school room miss here) then I highly recommend this book . It's on par with Amanda Quick, Johanna Lindsey or Lisa Kleypas style and scope.

Great book despite the "old school" clutch shot cover too-LOL!

Excellent Introduction to Botany

This book is a must for anyone seriously interested in learning about plants and their relation to the other living kingdoms. It is richly illustrated and covers material clearly and in-depth. I have used the first edition for over eight years as 1) a good read and 2) a reference that continues to inform me as a serious gardener as well as an educated layman. The book emphasizes the evolutionary adaptative aspects of plants to their environment. Starting from the basics of chemistry, it covers plant anatomy, physiology, genetics, and taxonomy. It is a wonderful resource.

Thsi book was a perfect bookb for someone who wants to know the straight facts about Botany. For example, a college student might enjoy useing this book because it is packed with so much information.

This was our text for Bis. 1C (Winter 98) at U.C. Davis. The book was well illustrated, but was far too in-depth for an intro course. I found lecture notes more useful.
