About the Author

Lizabeth A. Allison is Chancellor Professor of Biology at the College of William & Mary. She received her Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington, specializing in molecular and cellular biology. Before coming to William & Mary, she spent eight years as a faculty member at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Liz teaches introductory biology for majors and upper-division molecular biology courses. She has mentored graduate students and more than 100 undergraduate research students, many of them coauthoring papers with her on intracellular trafficking of the thyroid hormone receptor in normal and cancer cells. The recipient of numerous awards, including a State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Award in 2009, Liz received one of the three inaugural Arts & Sciences Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence in 2011, and a Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence in 2012. In addition to her work on this text, she is author of Fundamental Molecular Biology, now in its second edition, with a third edition underway.

Michael Black received his Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from Stanford University School of Medicine as a Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellow. After graduation, he studied cell biology as a Burroughs Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. His current research focuses on the use of molecules to identify and track the transmission of microbes in the environment. Michael is a professor of Cell & Molecular Biology at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where he teaches introductory and advanced classes for majors in cell biology and microbiology. In addition to his teaching and research activities, Michael serves as the director of the Undergraduate Biotechnology Lab, where he works alongside undergraduate technicians to integrate research projects and inquiry-based activities into undergraduate classes.

Jeff Carmichael received his B.S. in Biology from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of Georgia. As an undergraduate student, he spent some time studying enzyme kinetics through a fellowship at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. His graduate work focused on sexual reproduction in an intriguing group of seed plants. He has been teaching and coordinating Introductory Biology at the University of North Dakota for more than 20 years. He also serves in the Office of Instructional Development where he helps other faculty members incorporate evidence-based best teaching practices in their courses. He has received excellence in teaching awards at UND and as a graduate student in Georgia. His revision of Unit 6 and part of Unit 5 of the Sixth Edition is his first foray into textbook writing.

Scott Freeman received a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington and was subsequently awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Evolution at Princeton University. He has done research in evolutionary biology on topics ranging from nest parasitism to the molecular systematics of the blackbird family and is coauthor, with Jon Herron, of the standard-setting undergraduate text Evolutionary Analysis. Scott is the recipient of a Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Washington and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the UW Department of Biology, where he teaches introductory biology for majors, a writing-intensive course for majors called The Tree of Life, and a graduate seminar in college science teaching. Scott’s current research focuses on how active learning affects student learning and academic performance.

Greg Podgorski received his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Penn State University and has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Plank Institute for Biochemistry and Columbia University. His research interests are in biology education, developmental genetics, and computational biology. Greg’s most recent work has been in mathematical modeling of how patterns of different cell types emerge during development and how tumors recruit new blood vessels in cancer. Greg has been teaching at Utah State University for more than 20 years in courses that include introductory biology for majors and for nonmajors, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, and microbiology, and he has offered courses in nonmajors biology in Beijing and Hong Kong. He’s won teaching awards at Utah State University and has been recognized by the National Academies as a Teaching Fellow and a Teaching Mentor.�

Kim Quillin received her B.A. in Biology at Oberlin College summa cum laude and her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley as a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow. Kim has worked in the trenches with Scott Freeman on every edition of Biological Science, starting with the ground-up development of the illustrations in the first edition in 1999 and expanding her role in each edition, always with the focus of helping students to think like biologists. Kim currently teaches introductory biology at Salisbury University, a member of the University System of Maryland, where she is actively involved in the ongoing student- centered reform of the concepts-and-methods course for biology majors. Her current research focuses on the scholarship of teaching and learning with an emphasis on visual model-based reasoning as a science process skill.��

Emily Taylor earned a B.A. in English at the University of California, Berkeley followed by a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Arizona State University, where she conducted research in the field of environmental physiology as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow. She is currently an associate professor of Biological Sciences at the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. Her student-centered research program focuses on the endocrine and reproductive physiology of freeranging reptiles, especially rattlesnakes. She teaches numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, including introductory biology, anatomy and physiology, endocrinology, and herpetology, and received the California Faculty Association’s Distinguished Educator Award in 2010 and Cal Poly’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2012.�

Biological Science is acclaimed for its clear. The book has a friendly style, excellent illustrations and multimedia material. Connect with real-life biological applications and scientific problems through boxes. In my opinion, Biological Science is the best textbook regarding life and biology.

Terrible Text Book

Not enough details provided. I constantly read my Biology, 8th Edition trusty campbell biology book to understand topics. This book is very poorly explained. I don't know why my professors chose this book...campbell biology saved my a$$. if you are using this book buy the campbell one as well. it will help in your bio classes.

One of the worst textbooks I have ever read.

I am a fourth year Animal Science student taking an introductory biology course. I have changed my major multiple times and managed to get through several science classes that discuss aspects of biology in-depth before actually taking an Intro to bio class. Though I am not proficient in Biology, I am very familiar with the basic concepts.

That being said, I absolutely hate this textbook. It has taken me two solid days to get through the second chapter with even a minimal understanding of what is being described because the erroneous details and overabundance of information that the author has bombarded readers with greatly hinders my ability to understand the text. I have purchased the Campbell Biology book mentioned in several other reviews of this particular text and am anticipating its arrival.

Teachers, please find a better (and less expensive!) text for your students. We don't need 1200 pages of garble to learn biology.

Although I do not now have a copy of John F. Kennedy's The Strategy of Peace, I read it as a teenager and was so impressed by the brilliant new President-elect. He seemed to have a special concern for freedom for the new countries that had been ruled by colonial powers. One piece was an argument for independence for Algeria. At the time he made that speech (I recall that as being the original form of that chapter) Algeria was still ruled by France. Kennedy became President in 1961 and Algeria got its independence in 1962, after a long war. He was very concerned with Africa. He wrote about the Middle East including the State of Israel. Great book, ahead of its time!!!!!

John F. Kennedy's, "The Strategy of Peace," was written for his 1960 campaign and reflects on the major events of the time, and his proposed policies on all regions of the world. If you read this book now, some forty years later, you can see that he not only predicted disasters in dealing with Indochina and Cuba, he proposes ways of dealing with them that were over looked by Lyndon Johnson and every other Vietnam-era president.

Excellent book

This was one of the better finance books I've come across and a definite keeper for reference. Instead of mindless rambling or chocked full of jargon, the material was concise yet contained enough detail to cover all aspects of equity valuation that one might need to know suitable for the CFA Level II prep. But even for laypeople who have no intention of taking the CFA, this book will be very easily understandable with just a rudimentary background in basic finance theory.

The layout is very logical, basically covering the four important aspects of equity valuation: DDM, Free cash flow models, price multiples, and residual income. Under each of these, the reading builds up to form a bigger picture of what needs to be understood. Examples are very clear and do not rely on specific methods of solving, such as being only relegated to math equations, spreadsheets, or financial calculators. You basically can approach any of the problems in whatever way you want. The emphasis is on understanding rather than route "do it my way" methods. The book appears to have been very well proofread, so you don't find numerical errors that can make you pull your hair out as with other books.

There is also a workbook for this series but at my time of writing, it has yet to be released. When it is out, I would give this book series six stars in strength.

An important reference book in CFA curriculum

It is an extremely important reference book because I am preparing for CFA Level II exam. I've found the book an introductory one to illustrate basic concept in investment industry. Any one who wants to enter the investment banks,mutual funds,asset manangement corps. should have this book in hand.

I strongly recommend it to all candidates on the road to getting CFA charter, and other partitioners in investment field may also find it helpful.

Analysis of Equity Redo

This book is the same book with a different name. The first edition was called "Analysis of Equity Investment Valuation." After reviewing the table of contents as well as several chapters, I have the following to report: The Table of Contents is the same; and the rest of the book is the same, too. The pages don't exactly match because in the new book the block paragraph style has been chosen.

You do not need this book for the CFA. If you call the Institute, they will tell you not to purchase the source books because the program has been tailored specifically for the candidates. Instead, the Institute mandates that you buy the "program".

If you really want the book, then buy the old version for a fraction of the cost. The content is the same.

Lovely

Imagine sitting with a new dear friend, sharing a meal and childhood stories, sometimes laughing, sometimes crying, asking "then what", and leaving mesmerized and amazed at the resilience a soul can possess. That is this memoir. I've watched Top Chef for ten (!) years, and have always been impressed with Padma's grace and poise, even while eating something less than appetizing (hunk of fat, anyone?). Beyond being beautiful, Padma guides the chefs and the show through each season with humor and a gentle touch. I decided to read "Love, Loss, and What We Ate" partly because of the title, and partly because of the revelation that she'd been molested as a child. As a survivor, I was dying to know how she came out on the other side. I got so much more. There is an immediacy and intimacy to this book, that feels like she is just sitting at my table, having a cup of tea, which I think is really remarkable for anyone sharing their story.

Padma Lakshmi's memoir has chaatpati

As a long time viewer of Top Chef and a modest supporter of the Endometriosis Foundation of America, I may have been predisposed into liking "Love, Loss, and What We Ate". With that said, Padma is a gifted storyteller, using vivid details of sight, sound, smells, touches, and tastes to transport you to her experiences in India, Europe, and the United States. There's flavors for every reader's palette: from her immigration story growing up between 2 cultures, fans of Top Chef will enjoy her behind the scenes anecdotes about the show, the highs and lows of relationships, and mothers everywhere can identify with journey into motherhood.

I was struck by the honesty and introspection in which Padma discusses very difficult topics like childhood abuse, the dissolution of her marriage with Salman, diagnosis of endometriosis, pregnancy, and the tragic passing of Teddy. Beyond the physical scar on her right arm suffered in adolescence, Padma shares her mental and emotional scars, revealing a vulnerable, insecure woman who persevered to achieve the success and acclaim that she has.

Strategic planning is difficult, Systems approach makes it easier

Everyone says they do strategic planning. But what they often do is think linearly about their current problems. Too often, they either shortchange the entire effort, or keep funding the sunk-cost projects that don't have the potential to create a transformation in their business.

Instead, if you consider a systems thinking approach to your strategic planning, as in Brown's book, you have a shot of thinking through what your business really is. Once you do that, you can reconsider your organization, your project portfolio, whatever it is you need to do.

As Brown says, "Strategy is about creating sustainable advantage" and "Strategy formulation should be deliberative."

This is one of those things that is simple to explain and difficult to do. However, you can do this iteratively (and I think you should do it iteratively), because in a systems approach to strategy, once you start to perturb the system, things will change. As you select your capabilities and execution approach and refine them, you can assess how they work.

A systems thinking approach takes the dynamics of the situation into account, and Brown walks us through that with the different orientations.

Strategic planning is still hard work. You will still have to spend time thinking. Your strategy won't magically fall out of the sky into your lap. But Brown's suggested approaches are more substantial than many of the old standbys.

What is Strategy?

The answer to this question alone makes the book worth every penny. Dr. Brown correctly notes that while many people use the term "strategy" or "strategic thinker", far fewer have a grasp of the meaning and mechanics of strategy. Systems Thinking Strategy cuts through the ennui and lack of specificity pervading much of management thinking, and it does so in a manner that is both direct and conversational. The usual suspects of business book stories (Harrah's, Walmart, etc.) are here, but in Dr. Brown's hands they are focused toward a thesis that is pragmatic and memorable.

Sci-Fi RPG for Just About Anyone

This is the third core rulebook of the Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay system (following Dark HeresyDark Heresy RPG: Core Rulebook (Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay) and Rogue TraderRogue Trader RPG: Core Rulebook (Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay)). You assume the role of a Space Marine from the Chapters of the Black Templars, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Storm Wardens or the Ultramarines. You are inducted into the militant arm of the Ordo Xenos - the Deathwatch. You defend the Imperium of Man from the myriad alien threats that seek to wipe it from existence like the Tau, the Tyranid and the Orks among many others.

For those new to roleplaying, Deathwatch can prove to be enjoyable and fast. The characters you create are larger than life and possessed of a cornucopia of powers and abilities. The universe is grim and offers no shortage of conflicts to resolve and foes to face.

For those already familiar with Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 Universe, this book is easy to read through. Your first gloss over can pretty much cover the crunch (the rules and mechanics) in under a week since the background and story, or the fluff, is pretty much known to you. However, after that you'll still want to sit back and enjoy re-acquainting yourself with it. This book puts forth some incredibly interesting facts regarding some of the Chapters. You will learn more about their preferred methods of battle, their attitudes regarding alien species (I was amazed to find that some Chapters are indeed even less tolerant than others), attitudes toward the Codex Astartes (the Space Marines' version of the Military Uniform Code of Justice) and more.

For those familiar with either of Deathwatch's literary predecessors, you will be pleased to know that the overall system remains unchanged and this book even gives suggestions on do's and dont's for Dark Heresy/Rogue Trader/Deathwatch crossovers. You may want to use miniatures for combat as there are rules to allow players to face down entire hordes of enemies.

There is something in this work for those familiar with only the tabletop wargame, those familiar only with tabletop rpg's, those familiar with both and those familiar with neither. A worthy purchase.

The wait was long; finally We can be Astartes!

Since the eighties that many players of WH 40K awed by the wealth of background, the fabulous imagination of the battle system storyplot and the immense material published in novels, wanted to play Adeptus Astartes in a RPG. The amount of adaptations of the WFR (Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay) by RPG troupes were numerous but they always failed to capture the power and glory of the Astartes. It was difficult for many reasons including game balance and homogeneity of the characters.

FFG rose up to the challenge. First "Dark Heresy RPG" showed us the WH 40K Universe coming alive; "Rogue Trader" added the exploration and titanic vessels commanded by the players...but all the players still waited for the Astartes. Now, after more than 20 years you can do just that - Play an Adeptus Astartes!

Belonging to the Deathwatch, this game gives you the opportunity to mix Space Marine Chapters (in the basic rulebook you can choose from Ultramarines, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Storm Wardens and Black Templars) adding diversity, mixed loyalties and chapter politics into the equation.

The players can also choose from six specialities including: Tactical, Assault, Techmarine, Apothecary, devastator and Librarian. The costumization of each character is extraordinary and the players can choose skills and talents from several sources. But they also share several standard characteristics: all are Adeptus Astartes with superhuman capabilities, they are all highly trained having an enormous amount of starting standardized skills and talents provided by their training and implants, they are loyal to the Emperor and they know no fear.

The rules for Deathwatch are very similar to the other WH 40K RPG games Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader (and based in the second edition of warhammer fantasy), although there are some new rules: including solo and squad mode, oaths of battle, cohesion and squad mode abilities (including defensive, offensive and from specific Chapters), etc.

The game play is very militaristic and objective driven. From the selection of equipment for the mission (with requirement values), the choosing of the leader and the establishing of a plan, the Kill team has lots of freedom on how to acomplish each objective. Obviously there are many more types of stories you can run with your characters, but the basic structure is the mission.

Just two remarks: There are some typos that escaped the editor and the game examples could be much better.

Very good art and flavour text are abundant and everything highly respects the already existing sources of information on this rich universe.

But what are you waiting for? Humanity and the Imperium need YOU! Don your Power armour and grab your sacred Boltgun and start cleansing the heretic, the alien and the Witch.

By the Emperor, I highly recommend this book.

Deathwatch is the 3rd installment of the Fantasy Flight's role-play core rule books for the Warhammer 40,000 universe. It is also one that for many was highly anticipated. At long last the Adeptus Astartes are available to play. What does this mean for the universe as a whole? Well quite a lot.

Continuing with the theme built in in the previous books Dark Heresy RPG: Core Rulebook (Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay) and Rogue Trader RPG: Core Rulebook (Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay)the galaxy is expanded some more, this time taking the players south of the Ultima Segmentum. The Deathwatch is a chapter dedicated to defending the Imperium of Man from the Xenos, as such it works with the Ordo Xenos of the Inquisition, however it is the firepower. Taking soldiers from different Space Marine Chapters, the players form a Kill-Team in Deathwatch, and must learn how to work with Space Marines from a different chapter with different traditions.

Key to this book is the militaristic style of missions, it is not based on a free-flowing style as Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader is, but more on orders coming from above. Even in this there is room to expand and create a campaign that is fun and enjoyable for everyone. Also, if you are so inclined, all 3 core rule books are compatible and can be used in each of the others...just beware doing so because a Space Marine is very powerful! Because of the high combat nature of the book, combat is streamlined making for easier faster fights and more powerful enemies are given. Chaos Space Marines, Tau, and Tyranids all present formidable opponents for Space Marines of the Deathwatch.

Overall this was an excellent book, the Psyker powers are more akin to the style of Rogue Trader suggesting that power rolls and power thresholds are no longer the need, as such each chapter of Librarian has their own Chapter specific powers. This allows for more flavor of powers. Also squad-mode and solo-mode combat is allowed. This is a must have book for any fan of the Warhammer 40K universe and roleplaying!
