Awesome story with only a few minor issues.

I bought this book because I'm a big fan of Mr. Westerfeld's Uglies series, and because I'm hoping to have more of his books read before I catch a glimpse of him at an upcoming book fair. I'm so so glad I picked this one up. I read the whole thing in two days because I simply couldn't put it down.
The duel story of Deryn and Alek really captures the mind. I loved the references to real world events and the quick comparison between his book and the real story of The Great War makes me want to research more about WWI so I'm more prepared for the references while reading the next book in the series.
There's a bunch of great tension in both storylines and I was so excited when the two finally crossed paths, despite the difficulties they faced while crossing paths.
If I had to nitpick a problem, I'd say it's the disjointed way the time jumps in the individual storylines as they move forward before they meet up. There would be parts where some grand future adventure would be hinted at only to have it ripped away from the reader to jump to some several weeks in the future. I'm sure the plan was to get the characters in the single storyline as soon as possible, but it was a bit jarring.
Overall though, I fell in love with this world and the characters and I'm eagerly looking forward to getting to the next book in the series.

Great Steampunk Adventure

This story is a combination of alternate history and steampunk. It takes place in 1914 when Europe is on the verge of war. It stars Deryn Sharp who has disguised herself as a boy now named Dylan and joined the air corps. She finds herself as a middie on the Leviathan which is a living ship made up of a number of fabricated animals. Deryn and her people are Darwinists because, in this world, Darwin discovered DNA and a craze for creating all sorts of new living beings began.
It also stars Aleksandar who is the son of Archduke Ferdinand. It begins when the Archduke and his wife are assassinated and Alex's loyal subjects are trying to get him to Switzerland and safety. Austia-Hungary is the land of the Clankers. Alex's people have developed all sorts of interesting machines. In fact, they flee in a walker which is sort of like a tank with legs.
The two kids converge on a glacier in Switzerland which is where the Leviathan is forced to land after being attacked by German airships. Alex and his cohorts have a secret base there where his men hope he will spend the war. But he has to see if he can help when the ship comes down.
They have to work together when the forces searching for him and for the Leviathan converge. Add to this a science boffin named Nora Darwin Barlow who has an urgent need to get some egg to the Ottoman Empire and you have all sorts of action.
I loved all the steampunk details both of the Clanker's technology and the Darwinist's beasties. I also like the friendship that grew between "Dylan" and Alex. Deryn was a great character who is determined to be who she wants to be despite the handicap of her gender. She is brave, smart and adventurous.
The story continues in BEHEMOTH and I can't wait to read it.

Highly Creative Steampunk

This is probably the most creative steampunk book I have ever read. Whereas it is typical to place this genre in the Victorian England of the Industrial Revolution with amazing mechanical advances, the genius of this book is to add Darwinian genetic engineering. The book tells the stories of the first week after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand that started the first World War with half of Europe consisting of Clank (mechanical steampunk) countries and the other half Darwinists (genetic engineering steampunk).
The book follows a young girl who sneaks into the Royal Navy as a boy and ends up serving on a living airship engineered from whale “heredity strings” and the son of the slain Archduke. The action is steady, the characters three-dimensional, the dialog (and terminology) interesting, and the plot plausible. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Westerfeld’s world, and I am very much looking forward to starting the second book in the series tomorrow. If you are at all interested in Steampunk, I highly recommend this book. You won’t be disappointed.
